Ted's question about ATRAC3 and other codecs
« on: June 20, 2002, 12:38:08 pm »

[moved this here so it has a subject]

MJB does not play a wav file incoded by Sony STRAC3 all other players I hav tried do including windows media player, winamp, Soniq, Musicmatch etc. . Thses player do so without additional codecs. Any ideas?
MJB will play these files if they are contained in a .ASX file and the ASX file is loaded into MJB. Why?
It appears that MJB is confused. It lists these wav encoded files as WMA files. When I try to play the files on MJB 8.289 I get the message " Please select a file to play" when using version 8.300 the message goes away and MJB does not play the selection. The files are not corrupt as they play through other media players.

the developers of MJB maintain that MJB will play any file that Windows media player will in the case of the WAV files this in not true. This is driving me crazy! I want to settle on MHG as my one and only player and pay the fee. I cannot do so unitl this problem is answered. I like ATRAC3 it works better in my opion then all other encoders.

We don't support ATRAC3.  It's a Sony format, and they have an expensive license.  The Winamp plugin might work.  MJ supports most Winamp plugins.

ASX files are a problem for us because, unless you are Microsoft, you can't tell whether the file is audio or video.  Beginning with build 300, we assume it is video.

[Ted's reply moved here]

This may be a repeat. I pushed a key and the message I was sending disappeared.
Thanks for your feedback.
Couple of Points.

All the players I have tried in this ATRAC playback situation played back the WAV ATRAC files without an extra plug-ins other then the ATRAC codec I installed for media player.. This means that they are using the Sony windows ATRAC CODEC to play back the file.

Sony gives this codec away. I have a copy of the codec with a Sony logo on it. If this is the case what do I have to do to get MJB to play back an ATRAC file? Is there a patch or a workaround.

You mentioned that MJB might be able to use a winamp plug-in, if so what plug in? There is a Windows/Winamp WMA plug in. Is this the one? I tried to install it in the MJB program. It installed but had no effect on the playback.

While I can program in VB I do not have the knowledge to write a MJB plug-in. Can you recommend somebody I can hire to write a plug-in using the Sony ATRAC codec?
