Need For Speed

Hi;

I have noticed that some programs load much faster then others.  Case in point…

Win XP’s Media Player loads almost instantaneously.  But, MJ 8 loads very slowly (by comparison).

Is it…
* The type of language used?
* The efficiently (or tightness) of the programming?
* The complier used?
* Or, that MJ 8 is simply loading more “goodies” when it loads?
* Or, all of the above?

Or, is it that Win XP’s Media Player is tightly embedded in Win XP’s core code & some of it is already loaded when Win XP loads, so there is much less work to do when loading?

I know that MJ 8 is far superior to XP’s Media Player (or any other player for that matter), but just why is it so much slower to load?

Thanks again for all the fine work.

Since Bill Has “Innovated” It Into Windows I Am Sure Some Of The Needed Dll's And Files Are Already Loaded When Windows Loads

DocLotus - How many times do you actually load MJ in a day?

I load it when I reboot or when a new build is released. Sometimes I don't load it more than once a week.

It should load in 10 or 15 seconds.  How long does it take and how many files?

Are you loading anything off a networked drive?

To… Gatobrit & JimH.

I usually only load MJ 2 or 3 times a day as it is fairly slow to load (about 4 – 6 seconds, I have a very fast computer).  The real problem is with file associations.  I often download many small video files 20 – 50 at a time.  I double click on them one at a time in Explorer to see which ones I actually want to keep.  Currently Windows Media Player pops up instantly (less then 1 second).  I delete the ones I don’t want then move the remainder into a video folder that I use for MJ 8.  I then load them into MJ 8 for final viewing.

I’m just curious why Windows Media Player is so darn fast.  I have noticed this behavior in some other Windows programs.  Another example is the speed difference in load times between Windows Explorer & Ontracks Power Desk 5.0 file manager.  PD 5.0 takes about 3 - 5 seconds & Explorer about 1 (or less) seconds.  I was using Norton Navigator file manager & the same thing happen.  It took about 3 – 5 seconds to load.

Sorry, that wasn't fair.

Windows Media Player may have no library to worry about.

Microsoft may also be cheating.  Wait for our OS.

Media Jukebox starts almost instantly for me.

Double check what plugins you have running.  "Server" type interface plugins and extra DSP plugins can both slow you down...

Hi DocLotus

check also what you have set as startup option (Settings->Options,  Startup Options). I see a noticeable slowdown ( 4-to 5 sec) if I set the startup to be "Start", probably  because it's starting a html component (IE?). If, for example, I put startup option to Playing Now , it's more than twice as fast (1.5-2 sec on  my 1.8 Ghz P4)
