Question: Playing MKV File - which parameters to set?
« on: September 09, 2010, 12:57:46 pm »

well, guys, I have to admit, I'm no video guy... we have now 320'000 music tracks and 1'000 videos in our MC database and besides some nicks and dents it works well... but I couldn't figure out how to set which parameters where to make playing an MKV video file fully automatic...

Within my options in section video under MKV file extension everything is set to "automatic" but when starting to play such a file a message shows up on the main MC monitor (of course on another floor, not in the theater room... which means a bit more exercise... but which is also sometimes very annoying!) that it "cannot render with the renderer 9" and that it would use something else... asks for a click on 'OK'

Who can tell me what is wrong with my settings?

All the other stuff seems to play automatically (ok, sometimes after the double stop at the end of a DVD movie I sometimes get a program crash, as already stated somewhere else in that forum... anyway)

Help appreciated :)

Sounds like a decoding filter problem.

What DirectShow filters are you using?  The best system for pretty much all "modern" containers (MKV and MP4, mostly) is Haali as the Source Filter plus FFDSHOW for the transform filter (though CoreAVC can be very nice for HD AVC/H264 content).

Other ones, particularly source filters, can cause problems.  Stuff like Nero's, Sony's, and Cyberlink's have all been known to cause trouble for many users.

glynor,

thanks for your response... well, lol, I'm absolutely not familiar with these filters and settings, but I try to play around with them, so I suppose I set 'Haali' as my filter in the video options for MKV files... (didn't even know that there are source and transform filters, lol)

I keep you posted if I have success or not

thanks

I'll try to help.  It might be a relatively simple fix.  You probably just need to uninstall a few things and get a better set of filters on your system.  There are good free filters you can use, but a bunch of crappy ones that break stuff out there too.  Most importantly: You almost certainly want to keep the playback settings in MC set to the defaults if you can, and fix the problem itself in Windows.  You generally want to keep the Playback Method set to Automatic in MC's Tools -> Options -> File Types, unless you really know what you are doing.

Instead, can you try these few things for me?  Go here, and download the program called CCCP Insurgent.  This is a tester tool for DirectShow filters.  Run it.  It doesn't need an installer or anything, it'll just run as it is.  So, after you download the program, just double click on it to open it up.

1. In the dialog window that appears, I'd like you to list anything that shows up in the left-hand Codec/Filter Packs box for me.

2. Then, go to the Tools menu and choose Test Render.  Then, in the browser window that appears, find one of your MKV files and open it.  Then, copy the results and paste them here.  It should look something remotely like this:

Code: [Select]
File: M:\Video\TV Show\Dexter\4\Dexter - 4e01.mkv

Filter 0: Default DirectSound Device
Filename: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\quartz.dll
Filter CRC: 2239FB6E
Date: 2009-12-19 | 05:02:48
Filter 1: Video Renderer
Filename: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\quartz.dll
Filter CRC: 2239FB6E
Date: 2009-12-19 | 05:02:48
Filter 2: AC3Filter
Filename: C:\Program Files (x86)\SageTV\SageTV\ac3filter.ax
Filter CRC: E098BB39
Date: 2007-08-29 | 11:12:08
Filter 3: CoreAVC Video Decoder
Filename: C:\Program Files (x86)\CoreCodec\CoreAVC Professional Edition\CoreAVCDecoder.ax
Filter CRC: 8F352812
Date: 2009-12-18 | 14:26:36
Filter 4: ffdshow Audio Decoder
Filename: C:\Program Files (x86)\Combined Community Codec Pack\Filters\FFDShow\ffdshow.ax
Filter CRC: 68ED0969
Date: 2010-05-09 | 20:23:28
Filter 5: M:\Video\TV Show\Dexter\4\Dexter - 4e01.mkv
Filename: C:\Program Files (x86)\Combined Community Codec Pack\Filters\Haali\splitter.ax
Filter CRC: B87FE393
Date: 2010-05-19 | 13:59:52

Note: For File CRC, use CRC Check from the Tools Menu!

Then, do this for me in MC:

3. Open MC and go to Help -> System Info.  As soon as the dialog opens, you can just click exit.  It automatically copies the text to the clipboard for you.  Then come here and paste that new stuff into the forum.  It should look like this:

Code: [Select]
Media Center 15.0.107 Registered -- C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 15\

 Workstation 6.1  (Build 7600)
Intel Core 3996 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 4189 MB, Free - 1298 MB

Ripping /   Drive D:   Mode:ModeSecure  Type:Auto  Speed:Max
Digital playback: Yes /  Get cover art: Yes /  Calc replay gain: Yes /  Copy volume: 100
Eject after ripping: Yes /  Play sound after ripping: No

Burning /  Drive D: _NEC     DVD_RW ND-3500AG   Addr: 3:0:0  Speed:17  MaxSpeed:17  BurnProof:Yes
Test mode: No /  Eject after writing: Yes /  Direct decoding: Yes /  Write CD-Text: Yes
  Use playback settings: Yes /

Portable Device Info
  Removed devices:

Interface Plugins:
  TiVo Server (Active)

4. Lastly, inside MC go to Tools -> Options -> Video.  Then make sure that the Default video renderer is set to Automatic.  It should be, unless you messed with it.  If not, fix it.

Note: When you paste BOTH of those pieces of text into the forum, you should then select the pasted text with your mouse and click the # button in the forum toolbar.  This will wrap that pasted text in CODE tags, which will put it in a grey box like mine and make it easier to read.

Oh, and there are several problems (some additional):

a) after playing some movies the program crashes...
b) playing an MKV movie the subtitles cannot be activated... they are there but simply not shown
c) starting an MKV movie the system reports always in a separate OK box on the system screen that the "advanced renderer 9" cannot be used and that the common renderer will get used... although I haven't set anything to special values, except the MKV filters you told me - the movie plays fine then after that OK box

thanks for your help, appreciate it!

By the way: the code section header on top cannot ? be eliminated... very strange

Thanks for the reminder.  I'll take a look tomorrow for you.

The thing I noticed first is that you are using CCCP, but it appears to be an older version.  I'd try this, just as a gut-instinct thing:

1. Open Add/Remove Programs and uninstall CCCP.
2. Also uninstall any other codec packs you might have installed while you are in there.  Individual encoders like XviD and x264 are okay, but if you see any individual copies of Haali Media Splitter, FFDSHOW, anything-by-Gabest, DirectVobSub, or anything else similar, remove them too.  Just go through it systematically and remove everything related.  You don't need any extra crap, and if you do, you can always add it back systematically when you are done.
2a. I noticed in the log that you have a few missing filters from AudioRecorder.  If that shows in the Add/Remove program list, remove it too.
3. REBOOT!!  DON'T SKIP IT BECAUSE YOU ARE LAZY.
4. Download EITHER the latest official build of CCCP from here, or the latest beta build from here.  I'm using the 2010-09-07 build on my system here and it works fine.
5. Install it and try again.

It also could potentially be an issue with your video card drivers (or the video card itself).  Do you know what kind of video card you have?  (ATI, Nvidia, or Intel onboard?)  Another good step to do would be to download the latest drivers from the respective GPU vendor.  Then do:

1. uninstall the old ones
2. reboot
3. install the new ones
4. reboot
5. test

« Reply #10 on: September 20, 2010, 08:41:33 am »

glynor, I did exactly as you told me and here are the results:

When I start to play an MKV movie it happens the following
1) on the movie screen there is the cover image of the movie and a blinking *Opening...
2) on the system console screen there is a message box saying Enhanced Video Renderer can not be loaded on your system
and Video Mixing Renderer 9 is used instead
and if I hit the OK button
3) there is a message saying A decoder for the new track could not be found... Track Type: SRT/UTF8

Additionally I want to ask what settings I have to activate/deactivate in the CCCP settings box and which settings within the MC options for video

For MKV videos I have right now set within the options:
- Playback method: J River video engine
- Source filter: Haali
- Other filters: ffdshow Video Decoder
- Video Renderer: Automatic
All other settings are always set to 'Automatic'

In an additional step I switched the Video Renderer setting to Video Mixing Renderer 9 and the message mentioned above under 1) and 2) are gone, but the message mentioned under 3) stays - I suppose that is related to the subtitles which are missing... correct?

thanks

success, success

I googled SRT/UTF-8 decoder and found a hint that one has to switch to ffdshow raw video filter to make the subtitle streams show up

now it works for MKV  ;D

and THANKS glynor for your kind help, very much appreciated!!!

I'm glad to hear you got it sorted out.  But really, you should strive to just set Playback Method in MC's options to Automatic.  There is generally no need to select filters manually via the Options -> Video dialog unless you want to override the system default filters for some advanced reason.  (For example, maybe you want Windows Media Player to use one set of filters, but you want MC to use a different set of filters.)  In general, you DO NOT have to set ANYTHING under MC's Options -> Video to get video files to play back.  If you have a proper set of filters, it should "just work".

I have every single one of my video file types set to Automatic in MC's Options, and everything works fine.

There is also something weird going on with your system.  EVR is the default Windows Vista/7 renderer, and it should work fine.  Switching manually back to VMR9 is manually forcing it to revert to the Windows XP method.  The fact that EVR is not working means that something is likely badly broken with the DirectShow playback system on your machine.

I'd be more concerned over the root cause than anything else.

ok, glynor, please give me some hints what to do to resolve this situation  :)

I also have another weird thing on a connected computer:
All settings the same, also the latest CCCP beta version installed, I get choppy video and not synchoneous audio on that second system... weird weird

On the main system I have an ASUS EAH-4890 ATI Radeon graphics card and a Quad CPU... and no choppy video, no problems with the audio streams so far now... but not everything set to 'automatic'

On the second system I have a ATI Radeon HD 4550 graphics card installed, but an older dual CPU... choppy video and not synchroneous audio... connected over a 1Gbit switch connection to the main server (should be fast enough)

Both video cards support DirectX 10.1...

ok, I try to re-install all graphics card drivers and try to replace the DirectX software with the latest available, if possible

Have to point out that both systems have Win7 32-bit Enterprise N installed, if I try to install DirectX 9 runtime over it, it tells me that I already have it (or a newer version) installed... I would honestly prefer to have everything set to 'automatic' and nothing to worry :)

Older CPUs (including many lower-end Intel Core 2 Duo chips) are not up to the task of decoding HD H264 video with FFDSHOW, which is versatile, but not the highest performance decoder around.  I use CoreAVC.  It isn't free, but for $10 you can make your problems almost completely go away.

Have to point out that both systems have Win7 32-bit Enterprise N installed, if I try to install DirectX 9 runtime over it, it tells me that I already have it (or a newer version) installed... I would honestly prefer to have everything set to 'automatic' and nothing to worry :)

Dear lord, no.  You don't need to do that!!  DirectX is ALWAYS backwards compatible.  Win 7 comes with DX11.  You can't go backwards (and wouldn't want to).

I really don't know what to tell you.  EVR is PART OF the OS.  If it is broken, I can't begin to guess how you got it into that state.  My guess is that EVR itself isn't broken, but that some old incompatible filter is trying to run and decode the video or audio stream (one that is incompatible with Windows Vista/7 and EVR).  I don't see anything in the render graph you pasted above, but it wasn't clear if this was done with MC in a weird "mode", or if everything was set to auto.  It is hard to tell.  But, it could very well be a hardware failure, a driver issue, or a problem with Windows itself.  You didn't answer my question about your video card.  Video Card drivers absolutely CAN cause problems with EVR.

My suggestion would be to follow the CCCP Troubleshooting Guide here: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting_Guide

If you still can't get it fixed, ask for help on their forums.  They're pretty good at diagnosing weird stuff over there.

The alternative would be to nuke/pave Windows.

glynor, now it gets really more and more weird

I replaced the graphics card drivers with the latest version (Sept 2010) and now it doesn't show the subtitles anymore. The first start with all set to 'Automatic', there was no message, nothing, the movie played just fine... except: there were no subtitles!

When I switch on the ffdshow raw video filter and the ffdshow subtitle filter it asks me to use the Video Mixing Renderer 9, otherwise there is that error message again

I know that Windows 7 N versions come without the media stuff, no media player etc.
Can that be the problem?

I try to see if I can solve the problem with the CCCP troubleshooting guide... sigh... I'm a bit tired of all that :(

Windows 7 N is probably not the problem.

I think the Subtitles not showing is probably a GOOD thing.  That's generally what most people want, and is the default in CCCP.  To enable subtitle processing, simply open the CCCP Settings application, switch to the second "page" of the dialog, and then check the Autoload VSFilter (WMP & MC Support) box.  That'll load the VSFilter application when the directshow splitter filter finds subtitle streams in the video container.  Then it is a simple matter of configuring VSFilter to use your default language and to show the subtitles by default.

doesn't work... but:

I found the micro$oft info for the N version of the windows 7 O/S's:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968211

It's pretty clear that all video codecs won't work on an N O/S... have to load the media funcionality... then I suppose all that will work... this night I will download it and install it
And I checked it, I don't even have evr.dll loaded in system32, so it is obvious, what the problem is
Initially I just thought that I don't need the normal version of the O/S, as it reads "The N version of the operating system has no Windows Media Player included", so I thought, well, I have the best Media Center program, so why installing the WMP... but, as we can see, there are other downsides to this decision  ::)

I keep you posted

thanks anyway :)

Installing the Micro$oft media extensions as mentioned in my former post solved almost all problems, so this should be mentioned to all users somewhere please, JimH

Rule: DO NOT install any N version of Windows 7, as this breaks certain video functionality

I have still some details to solve with the subtitles in MKV containers, but these are details... probably will start a new thread if I cannot solve them on my own

THANKS, glynor, for your kind help - I learned a lot  :D

Rule: DO NOT install any N version of Windows 7, as this breaks certain video functionality

THANKS, glynor, for your kind help - I learned a lot  :D

Me too!  Huh!  I really would have assumed that version N would have just left off the Windows Media Player and MCE UIs, and not the underlying tech.  I'm quite surprised!

N Editions

Windows N Editions are available for both upgrades and new purchases, for the Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows 7. The features in the N Editions are the same as their equivalent full versions as well as the same price, but do not include Windows Media Player. The cost of the N Editions are the same as the full versions, as Windows Media Player can be downloaded without charge from Microsoft for the N Editions. This comes after an EU lawsuit in which Microsoft was sued for not allowing competition. Before Internet Explorer is launched, a browser choice dialogue is brought up to ask the user which browser they want, however Internet Explorer is still installed.

The media feature pack for N versions is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=31017ed3-166a-4c75-b90c-a6cef9b414c4&displaylang=en

Apparently MS has not only removed WMP from the N versions. They have also removed some essential components that other DirectShow players may require.

Alex, I think this link is the better way to read background information and reach also the downloads (link to the 32-bit and 64-bit versions you mentioned in your post is provided there) of the necessary parts:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968211

You know how things sometimes change on the MS websites, the knowledge base is pretty much the best way to reach info on the long run on those servers (well, that's my experience, anyway

but at least we learned our lesson  :)
