i just noticed that when i do an update tags from library to mvk/avi's the sidecar also gets the play stats like number plays. it does not do that when just playing one of those files (ofcourse because i have that disabled in the lib). now i do think its nice to do that with movies but feels overdone with images and music.
so my questions are:

should mc write number plays et al to the sidecar when doing an update tags only?

should it always do that, so also when playing a movie?

are there people who write play stats like number plays to all files?

 :)

and as a sidenote  ;)
in the sidecars that got writen automatically i have two fields that are apparently hidden library fields stack top and stack view i dont use stacks, and they are disabled to write  to tags..  8)

one other questions.

am i right to assume that the update for external changes does not see changes to the sidecar file?

and an other sidecar question. im trying to write sidecar file over a network to a shared disc. it is for a mov file. the file is there and plays, but the moment a change in the tags is made, the programm says something about that it is not able to write the tags because the file can not be found. has this something to do with being a mov file, or that it is over the network to the adres:
\\Blabla\Fotoos

I think you already answered many of your questions.

AFAIK:

1. The sidecar file is tagged only when the actual media file would be tagged (if it could be tagged).

2. The sidecar files are not monitored because they are not part of the media library. Only if the media file has a changed time stamp Auto-importer can notice that and trigger a tag read (and in this case read the changed data from the sidecar file).

Ragarding the mov file, just put a similarly named avi (or mpg, mkv, etc) file in the same folder and test it. If it works then probably the mov format & QuickTime decoding (if you use QT) is causing the problem.

Edit: Can you create a sidecar file for a mov video if it is stored in a local folder?

thanks alex, that is the interesting part. mkv and avi files are no problem over the network, and the mov files are no problem lokal, its mov files over a network i think. and sometimes a few work. not sure why mc uses the quicktime decoder again when just writing a sidecar to a file that is imported already. ? but it seems it does.

about the not updating via autoimport.. i would consider the sidecar part of the library, i do know what you mean, but maybe mc should look to the sidecar files? it knows what they are for. i think.

bump.
files that play fine give this screen when trying to tag them:

the log shows that it seems to use the qt engine?

the sad thing for me is that i did get my wife enthousiastic about tagging the files we get from our photo camera, but she got sick of all the tagging errors.
