DLNA\Library Server... Lockups, And Errors While Playing Videos
« on: October 26, 2010, 01:05:56 pm »

The last few versions of jriver. I've been having problems with videos playing,
MY HTPC does not have any libraries, It Connects to my JRiver server

3 problems i seem to be having...

First issue... dope (Band Name) music video. it plays on server, but will not play on HTPC.( this has been happening with other videos as well. NOT All but some)
i went to video\music videos\5 stars\ rock\dope on HTPC then chose it and it loaded right away saying opening, but then i get this error...
media center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files. please make sure that the path in your library points to the right location.

Second Issue... some vids play fine others it just says opening, then it locks up jriver staying on the opening screen. only way to close it is ctrl alt delete. has something changed in jriver server side? on server\main system all files play fine.
wondering if i have  a setting wrong in tools options, media and network?

Third Issue, When chosing any video to play, it's alot slower then it use to be versions back, its like something has changed, maybe conversion settings? i don't know this stuff is beyond me, and i don't want to start messing with settings on server side or HTPC, especially since i have not installed anything on either machine, or changed anything for over 6 months. both machines have been using klite mega codec pack for years. I've been asked to switch to cccp and also to goto HTPC and to goto my network shares in WINDOWS and see if the file plays on HTPC... Ive not shared any files due to the fact i'm using Connect to library, so i 'm leary on sharing 18 drives of data.

Any tips info, help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

It sounds like a codec problem on the client.  Try transferring the file to the client and playing it there (without any MC servers).

Installing CCCP usually fixes this kind of problem.  Turn off "Task bar notifications" for FFDShow and Haali.

After CCCP fixed your previous problem I assumed you would install it on all your computers. If you have not done so this would be a logical first step.

Ok... all pc's are now running CCCP and movies/.avi's that were hanging and just saying opening and nothing would happen NOW WORK!!!! AWESOME!!!

BUT :(

when in HTPC videos/music videos/ Rock/Dope/ i chose play i still get this error...

media center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files. please make sure that the path in your library points to the right location.
which i dont understand because i'm using htpc connect to server. and i know for a fact this vid worked in the past with no issues on htpc. because it was a favorite music video for others when having parties.

Well I just grabbed the dope music video moved it to a public folder on server, Then went to HTPC, opened the public folder and dragged the file into JRiver (not desktop or anywhere else on HTPC ONLY into JRiver playing now)

And JRiver loaded the thumbnail, and i chose play and it played immediatelly with no errors.

So this is leading me to believe its a Server/Client issue....Any ideas?

possible my settings on server side in media network are not set up properly?

i don't want to mess with server settings to much, due to my lack of knowledge on these settings.

When you use "Connect to"
are you choosing your MC server as a library server or a dlna media server?

On your HTPC, do (did) you connect to the MC library with
file->library->connect to library->
then you choose a Library server or DLNA Media Server
I'm wondering which method you used.

i dont recall which one i originally used. it does it automatically now. if i have lockups i do know that i restart jriver then i goto file, library, load library then i choose Main server.

Hope This Helps!!
I Appreciate You helping Me with This.

On the HTPC??
load library?
If you do file->library->load library->library manager click on the one you load and edit, what is the browse location?

yes on HTPC, in standard view. i goto file, library, load library and choose main server. then it connects to main library server it loads all the files.

Went to library manager as you suggested...
Name  - Main server
Location - 192.168.0.126:52198

Thanks Again

Thanks for clarifying that!

So you are loading a library on the HTPC from another MC which has the actual files to be played on it's hard disk? (not on a NAS or some other network share)?

The version of MC is the same on both? (and what version is that?)

The video files play locally on the MC on the server machine but not always on the HTPC, correct?

well now we are getting into issues ive had in the past, that never got fixed so i used others suggestions and chose to ALWAYS use main machine as server. I hope the server part isnt broke and i have to change everything?

I started a thread about 6-8 months ago when i bought my htpc. letting everyone here know that the libraries i had made on HTPC and other pc's around the house were missing files... please see thread below
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=56010.0

So after this thread above i decided to just have my main machine which has a 16 bay direct attatched Server connected to it be the server and all PC's in the house will just connect to it so that all pc's will stay in sync.

And its been working great no files are missing, but now the last few versions of jriver. Some files wont play i get the error... media center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files. please make sure that the path in your library points to the right location.

sorry missed these 2 questions...

all machines in house are on version 15.0.142

Correct, All files (Audio, Images, Video) on main machine which has DAS attatched play flawlessly, no codec issues, no problems at all.(Just Future Wishes ;)) But yes Otherwise works like a charm.  :)

Ok, Thanks, I understand now.
Could you take one of the video's that doesn't play and put it on the HTPC's local storage and try to play it on the HTPC (trying to find out if it's codec related or network related).

well, i dont understand whats going on...

before grabbing the file. dope( music video) i went back to htpc went to video\music videos\rock\dope and played the file and it loaded it with no location errors.

I have been trying to get this file to play on htpc for the last 2 weeks. (it use to play with no issues) ive tried rebooting htpc, rebooting main machine(server) i've redone codecs as you guys suggested, I've also updated jriver on both machines.

And now when running one last test to play it on HTPC VIA Connect to library it plays instantly with no errors.
I have run tests on this exact file previously in the last 2 weeks multiple times. by grabbing the file from HDD on server machine, and copying the file itself over to HTPC's Desktop then dragging the file into HTPC jriver and it would play everytime with no errors (but if i tried playing the file from within JRiver on htpc i would get the location error). I've also tried grabbing the file and putting into a shared folder ON SERVER machine, going to HTPC network shares, then to the  folder i put it in and dragging that Dope music video file RIGHT INTO JRiver On HTPC (so basically playing the file from the Servers share on the HTPC JRiver machine)and it would play everytime as well.

I've also ran these tests on newest version of jriver. and have gotten the error except for today!

So i'm really confussed being i've not changed a darn thing on server machine or HTPC why it just works today? and why ive had these location errors from within JRiver?

Any other tests i could run? or software tweaks i could do to monitor what may be happening, for the next time this happens (cause i'm sure it will happen again since i've done nothing to fix it!
Thanks

Is it possible your network is flaky? Like maybe a wireless router that occasionally drops out? I had a linksys with standard firmware that used to do that...

thats a good idea!

I do have a trendnet wireless N router. but my HTPC is plugged in with a Network gigabit cable. do you know off the top of your head if there is a network monitor or something i could use to test it?
