J River won't play if DSP set to 24 bit
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:35:39 pm »

I have to set the DSP output in J River 15 to 16 bit (or 16 bit with dithering) in order for it to play.  The sample rate is 48,000 herz.
If I set DSP output to 24 bit I get a message that WASAPI cannot play 24 bit with 48KHZ.   This result occurs with downloaded 24 bit flac files as well as with wma files from CDs I have ripped with J River Media.
When I type DSP output in help, it comes back with nothing.  Is there some resource that would explain what DSP output is all about and how the bit rates and sampling rates affect DSP?
Any thoughts?

This is probably because you use WASAPI.
WASAPI bypasses the Win mixer.
No resampling, mixing etc will be applied.
As a consequence, all what is send to WASAPI must match the audio device exactly.
Either 24 bits or 48 kHz is not supported by your ‘sound card’

I had the same problem with kernel streaming. i switched to asio4all, and the problem was solved.
strangely enough, in mm, i used to have asio4all freeze on me, and ks was perfect. go figure.
