Stereo audio DVDs not working

DVDs with stereo audio do not sound through my stereo but surround sound work fine.  What might be configured incorrectly?  Playing 5.1 movies through MC are fine but stereo DVDs are not -- home movies, music videos, some concerts, etc.

I can play these stereo DVDs through VLC and I hear audio.

Any thoughts?
