creating a new library with old custom fields
« on: December 01, 2010, 07:10:16 pm »

Other than manually recreating them, is there a way to move my old user defined fields over to a new library?

Import the old library, then select all the files and remove them from the library.

Someone else may have a better method.

Did you set up your custom fields with the 'store in file tags' option? If so, the tags might show up when you recreate the custom fields in the new library.

If wig's suggestion does not work, you could try an unsupported hack that I have not tried but might work. Back everything up first because this might wreck your new library.

Copy from the old library all of the files named "field (xyz).jmd" where xyz is the name of your custom field to the directory containing your new library files. Restart MC and cross your fingers. If it doesn't work restore your new library from the backup and start manually creating the custom fields.

When you create the new library, the dialog where you specify a name and library location has an optional field titled "clone from".  This might do what you want directly.

I assume you know that MC makes automatic backups every so often? And you've tried one of these backups to get your custom fields?
