need to update database in realtime
« on: June 11, 2002, 03:54:55 pm »

MJ8 is not as stable as I would like... so it would be great if it would update its database in realtime instead of after the application is closed.
I lost some work when I was using MJ8 to move files on the hard drive. The files were in new locations, but after crashing, MJ8 showed these files in their old locations. It took a lot of work to recover (big sprawling music collection).  Another time, after investing 10 minutes going item-by-item through the options (great customizability, btw), MJ crashed and lost all my selections and I had to do it all again. Minor annoyances, yes, but it shouldn't happen in a program I pay for.  (These crashes are unrelated to the DVD-triggered crashes I posted about earlier.)

And while I'm complaining (I love MJ8 btw)...

What version of MJ?

Try IE/Tools/Windows Update to see what Microsoft says about your OS.

MJ does save its database in realtime -- usually within 5 to 10 seconds of a change.  You may have just been unlucky.

And if there's any way you can reproduce a crash, please let us know and we'll get it fixed.

Thanks and take care.

Great response time...

I have MJ v.8.0.293.
Windows XP... Windows Update gave me a security update from March.

I'll definitely let you know if I see some pattern to the crashes.  I suspect that the size of my library may be a contributing factor - about 11,000 files - but I have to think that there are many with bigger collections.  (RealJukebox used to crash daily, which was the reason I switched to MJ a year ago.)

I think you will find that although 11,000 files is big, there are many here that are bigger.  KingSparta for instance, as I have heard has somewhere north of 120,000 files, and has no crashing problems.

It must be me then.  I have a lot of problems unique to me... can I tell you about my stainless steel knives rusting or the color damage on my clothes?

I'm trying to figure out what my problem is.  Are any of these the likely cause?

Memory - trying to do too much at once - e.g., moving 1000 files while listening to music, with a couple programs (Outlook Express and IE) running but idle.  I have 512MB
Conflict with some other program - I can't imagine what program it would be
Restarting MJ after a dvd-caused crash without rebooting

Try doing MJ Help/Copy system info and then paste it here.

Crashes are often hardware related.  Bad memory, overheated CPU, or bad sectors on a disk drive, for example.

Try a google search for the symptoms you have and see what you can learn by reading about other people's experiences.

The only symptoms I've had is that my PC crashed very frequently when I had Real Jukebox on my old Dell (Win98), and now MJ crashes occasionally on my new Dell (XP).

As for other people's experiences... that's why I'm posting here - to see if anyone has had similar problems.

Here's my system info:
