Android ratings sync?
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:10:51 am »

Wife's been on a droid for a while.  I'm considering moving from iphone over to an android based phone soon.
In the portable device options for the droid, there's no checkbox as seen with other devices to choose whether you want ratings and playcounts syncd from the device or ignored.
Will this be a possibility soon when syncing android based devices?

I"m another potential Android convert who'd like to see this feature.

so far it's not available on a WinMo phone either; so I'm not too expectant it will happen for Android anytime soon.

however, I'm looking at getting a new Android phone also (my 5 year old WinMo is now unrepairable), so I'm really hopeful I'm wrong, and that this will be working soon.

I may also convert to Adnroid. Primary reason being to be able to sync ratings and playcounts on sync, like in the old days of the original ipod.

Is the android sync experience with MC pretty good? Can you rate songs with the default music app installed on Android?

How about photos? Does the android photo app see playlists/folders of photos? Can you do anything special like rate them?

I've been on a droid for about 4 months now.
Sync with MC is simple.
No way to rate songs on android and therefore no reason to be able to sync them in MC.
I've resorted to creating a playlist called "make it a 5" on the droid.
For the songs that deserve it, I simply add them to that playlist on the device.
Then prior to syncing, I just manually rate those few songs in MC.

I did find one music app for android that has star ratings in it.
I was excited for a minute, thinking that I could probably talk J River into adding support for it at some point.
However, in testing it, it is a proprietary method that only syncs with their own pc based software...which doesn't even write to the mp3 tags  :(  So, useless for our purposes.

I've just started using MC with my Droid2 and so far I like it.  I would love to see these features as well.  In my mind it would make this an iTunes killer.  If they had an android music app, even better.

Music PlayerPro now supports standard ratings inside the files. Though it's a little buggy for now (the ratings can be read but not written), this is really a nice feature I have not found anywhere else...

So now, what about synchronization ? :)

If the ratings cannot be written, then what is there to sync?
The music app would have to allow you to change the rating stars and actually save the change to the mp3 tag.  Only then could MC modify their sync routine to look for a change and update the library to the new rating.

Sorry, I was not very clear about that. They should be written, it just does not work because of a bug which I hope will be corrected very soon...

Finally had time to try out this playerpro app.
Looks like it can either save the rating star to the POPM tag in the mp3 file or can export to an xml file on the sdcard.
Would J River be interested in integrating this to the android sync process?

Gizmo currently increments playcounts in the library, as well as "last played" data.

That's what I need for my playlists to work. I can't rate on-the-go as I only use mine when I'm driving, but it feels reasonable that if it can do those two, it could do ratings too...
