Is it possible to save a calculated field to a tag?
« on: March 14, 2011, 07:19:48 pm »

I've come up with a way to overcome the rather awkward scrolling of long lists on my Cowon X7,

Because I don't use Genres, I have manually written the initial letter of the artists name to the Genre tag, now when I view Genres on the Cowen I get an alphabet, this makes it much easier to drill down to the artist that I want.

My library already uses a calculated field called Initial which uses an expression to generate the initial letter, I then use this in my directory structure to keep my main library neatly organised.

So Ideally I'd like to use the same expression on my Genre tag but have this stored in the file, this doesn't seem possible because the 'Store in file tags' option is disabled on calculated fields,

Can anyone think of a way around this?

Would a command able to update a standard field's value from a calculated field solve your issue ? This command would work like "Fill properties from filename...", but take a field or an expression in input instead of the filename. You would have to regularly run it on your whole library to update your [Genre] field from the [Initial] field...

I would love to have such a command. I recently needed that to set the [Name] field on some video files, and ended up combining a "Move, Rename, etc." and a "Fill properties..".

You might try the Copy/move option or a Excel style expression in the genre field

Wow thanks Vincent,

That's done the job, I never knew that function existed
