Silcon Dust HD Homerun "time out waiting for writer to start"
« on: February 24, 2011, 09:17:00 pm »

I am trying to get JT River Media Center version 15.0.174 setup and working.

I have a Silcon Dust HD Homerun dual tuner for tv hardware.

When I scan for channels it finds 60 channels and they seem correct. And the signal strength appears in the 90% +  area.

I dont have any program guide info setup and was hoping to just set a small handful of channels up and manually record.

When I double click on a channel I get the ".. waiting for writer to start" message. I see the channel LED selected on my tuner and so the hardware appears to be being accessed correctly.

While the program is waiting if I right click and show signal strength it shows very high,

One clue is that I recently wiped the slate clean on my computer. When I tried to get the HD homerun quick tv to work then it wouldnt work. They helped me diagnose that I had not installed any mpeg2 and ac3 driver. I had had them previously installed but after the wipe of my hard drive didnt realize I needed to install. They had been installed automatically with an old tv tuner card that I no longer was going to use.

So, I dont know a lot about this and somehow suspect that while I have set up some drivers for HD homerun that they are incorrect or insufficient for the media center.

Any help appreciated.

If you get "Time out waiting for writer to start" message, then the program has not yet gotten to the part that requires MPEG-2 video decoder and AC3 audio decoder.  So the problem may be something else.  In case you do need these decoders, you can install FFDShow.  You can try without time-shifting (Tools > Options... > Television > uncheck "start digital television in time-shifting mode" option) and see what happens.

Which country are you in?  If not in the United States (and other ATSC countries), are the channels you try to play encoded in MPEG-4 instead of MPEG-2?

Hi and thanks for responding on my question.

I did eventually install the mpeg 2 and ac3 drivers.

And I did not select  time shifting.

As far as country, I am in the USA and the tuner is set up to ATSC.

I have also been experiencing the same "time out waiting for writer to start" problem and after a good ten hours of serious frustration and failure  :-X I think I may need some assistance.

I have a Leadtek DTV 1000 S card and it seems to work fine with the supplied software. But with MC I can find all the channels but not view them, I get a black screen and the above message.

The Winfast software that came with the unit is really quite awful and I don't want to have to use it. MC is far better, I just need it to work.

Here is the filter info in case that helps.

We have had reports of problems from UK.  Which country are you in?  Do you have trouble with all channels?

To help us narrowing down the cause, please switch recording format from ts to jtv and see if it makes any difference.

I am in Australia.

I have tried TS and JTV. But I will try again.

I had vision on one channel briefly after changing my settings but when I changed channels I lost that vision and could not get it back even if I returned to the same channel.

I tried uninstalling Winfast to see if there was a clash but that didn't help.

I've been through a lot of codecs and settings to no avail.

I tried TS and it does have one difference to JTV.

With JTV the signal strength is always recorded as 0%, with TS it varies but is often at 100%. Sometimes with TS I can also get a record of the pixel rate, however to date I still get a blank screen.

Try installing MC as an Admin (right click on the installer and "Run as Admin").  You only have to do this once and you may find the "time out waiting for writer to start" issue will stop.

Mmm (I have the PAL Silcon Dust HD Homerun), and have found that the "time out" issue was either:
1) Firewall issues (try turning it OFF as a test)
2) Issues with permisions writting the TS Files (try turning off "Start digitial television in time-shifting mode" in the Television Options)

Again no luck with those tweaks.

I'm a week out now from installing the card and still can't use it as I would like.

Has there been any progress with these issues? As I gather I am not alone in experiencing them.

I would really like to have an integrated Media Center running but at present it appears as though that is not possible.
