Some video filters can't adjust bright / cont

Depending on what video filter i use the option to adjuts brightness and contrast are available or not.  For playing purposes I have to use coreavc which doesnt allow me to adjust (the adjust bars are grey'd out) but when i use power dvd filter i can.  Is this an issue with the filter or a combination of the filter and how it interacts with jriver and the nvidia card?  I have a computer downstairs at it is available with coreavc but it is an ati card.
