Severe crashing problem
« on: June 05, 2002, 08:20:12 am »

I'm funning MJ 8.0.289 on Win2K and I'm having several problem.

First one is crashing.  When I have just ripped a CD and it is
done, and I put another CD in, I get several dialog boxes that
come up one on top of another.  One is "Gathering information
and updating view" but underneath I get one or more CDDB dialog
boxes.  Unfortunately, I cannot view the CDDB dialog box, because
it is hidden by the "gathering info" dialog.  At this point,
about 10% of the time, MJ locks up, and the only way to kill it
is the task manager.  About 4 times in the last week, it has
even locked up my system and I had to reboot. This is a new install
of Win2k with all the updates and Norton Systemworks / Virus.
Interestingly enough, the lock up happens less frequently if I
don't click on "OK" for the dialog box that tells me that the
previous CD copy is finished.

Second, last night I started up MJ and all my playlists were gone.
They just weren't there.  Nothing else in my database was wrong,
but all the playlists just didn't exist.  This is when I discovered
that MJ (unlike some competing products) does NOT back up the
playlists automatically to a file.  So many many hours of work
lost.  Now I have to remember to export my playlists anytime I
modify them.  Can this be added as a feature?

I like MJ, but I will have to stop using it if it keeps crashing
on me so frequently.  I suspect that you have a race condition
in your threading code.

Other small nits -- if you don't associate MJ with audio CDs,
you get an error message from the OS about not being able to
find some file on the desktop.  You have to associate MJ with
audio CDs to avoid this error.

And if you want to submit a CD to CDDB (not already in their
database), but it is a compilation so there are separate artists
for each track in the MJ database, this information does not get
copies into the dialog to submit the info to CDDB, so you have
to type it all in again.

Wm Leler,

The problems with Wait Message window being on top of CDDB window will be fixed in next build of MJ (8.0.293)( later today ). We also think that we fixed the CDDB crash. And the compilation CD problem will be fixed in next build.

The playlist problem you described will not be very easy to fix, so that will have to wait till next version.

Don't give up, try new build.

Thanks!  Just downloaded the new build.  Will let you
know if I still have any crashing problems.

One rather small nit, but an annoying one.  Bring up the
Media File Properties dialog.  If you edit the name or
artist fields, and then click on the save button, the
dialog closes.  But if you edit the Genre field, you
have to click on the save button twice.  Once to stop
editing the Genre, and then again to close the dialog.
So depending on what field you edit, MJ has different
behavior.
