virtual subwoofer - whaa?

Can anyone explain approximately how the "virtual subwoofer" feature works? Not, "how do I use it?", but "how does it do what it does?". The reason I ask is that all the similar effects (SRS, Waves MaxxBass, etc.) seem to muddy up the audio a lot by adding harmonics that trick your ear into hearing bass notes that aren't actually there. But the jriver "virtual subwoofer" effect seems to accomplish this without muddying up the sound, it just sounds fantastic. So I'm just wondering what it's actually doing behind the scenes. Would love some more info!

I'm not sure if you guys are joking around about the "secret" thing or not...? But I am really curious what this effect does. And I'd also suggest selling it as a standalone VST/DX plug-in, as it's preferable to the likes of MaxxBass and its ilk, which are the current standard for bass enhancement.
