Television doesn't work
« on: April 19, 2011, 07:04:26 am »

Hi,

I'm trying to verify all functionalities of the JRiver MC (16.0.64) on the trial period.
I cannot get my TV tuner work. Tuner is Pinnacle PCTV nano stick (73e). Tuner work's without problems in Windows Media Center on the same configuration.
MC scans channels but do not show live TV or program guide (over air).
When I try to TV options -> Load Program Guide, MC says "Over the air scan could not be started, Please ensure that you have a valid television tuner and that it is not in use". When trying to watch live TV, it fails with time-out "waiting for writer to start", possible cause "no signal or faulty device".
But as sayed, HW works perfectly with WMC.

Thanks in advance,
Sakari

Not all countries use the over the air option.  You could use mc2xml for a program guide:

What country are you in?

Over the air guide is in use in Finland. Everything works fine with Windows Media Center and Media Portal with exactly same configuration.
Actual problem might not be over the the air guide itself. Live TV doesn't work either. So, some problems to access HW properly? The channel scan still finds the channels.

Sorry, over-the-air guide scan is not implemented for all DVB-T countries.

Any advice what to do? I cannot still watch the TV.
I can send you log. Where to send or save?

Another question (not related directly to this board) about remote control support.
Can I use "any" USB IR/RF remote? For example I would like to use Motorola Nyxboard Hybrid or similar.
Can I use keyboard directly to type e.g. search strings for any search functions available in MC?

Thanks for the support!

I can send you log. Where to send or save?

You log shows that a DirectShow graph was successfully built and run.  But there was no notification that the channel was tuned to.

Can you tell if the following parameters are correct for the channel you tried to play?  For example, is the frequency correct?

Transport Stream ID: 4097
Network ID: 13057
Service ID: 17
Frequency: 562000
Bandwidth: 8
Original Network ID: 8438
Audio PID: 650
Is AC3: FALSE (channel uses MPEG-2 audio)
Video PID: 512
PMT PID: 256
Teletext PID: 2321
Channel Name: YLE TV1

Okay, now you found the problem. Frequency is not right. For example this channel is the bundle with f=634MHz. When I edit the cannel / freq. manually, I got it work. Also all other channels seems to work. But still I cannot get EPG (on-air). I tried some xmltv grabber, but that one seemed to not have all channels for some reason. It would be good to have on-air EPG. Should it work?

But about frequency problem, for some reason MC doesn't get frequencies right for the bundles.

I give here some page links if it helpsto investigate (unfortunately in Finnish, but maybe you still manage to get some info from).
Channel bundles are here. In my region (Oulu), bundlles A, B, C and E are covered. You see there e.g. YLE TV1 within the bundle A, which was the channel in the log.

Here are the stations and frequencies. I'm in coverage of Oulu transmitter.

I hope this helps some.
Thanks for the help!

Sorry, over-the-air EPG scan is not implemented for DVB-T.  It is implemented for ATSC only.  DVB-T users have to use XMLTV data, which, in our experience, is more complete.

Ok. I have to try xmltv.

Then about DVB captioning / subtitling...
After quick test, it seems that DVB subtitles doesn't work for YLE (Finland's national public service broadcasting) channels. Other channels captioning seems to work. I'm not 100% sure / not so familiar to the standards etc, but I think YLE channels are using DVB-subtitles and other channels other technique (DVB-teletext?).
Should the DVB subtitles work with MC? If yes, may this frequency problem reflect also to DVB-subtitles to not work?

We have not tried to support Closed Captioning/teletexting/subtitling in either ATSC or DVB-T.  So I am not sure how much of it, if any, will work.

Is there any plan, or do you think you are going to support DVB subtitles near future?
