Transcoding to 24 `bit
« on: April 11, 2011, 08:19:50 am »

Is there any way to transcode a 24 bit flac file to a 24 bit wav? When I try to transcode a flac file to wav it always comes out 16 bit.

If not possible, is it going to be added in the future?

When using the "Convert Files" tool, if the input files are 24-bit, the resulting WAV files will also be 24-bit.

To use the convert tool, select files inside Media Center > Right-click > Library Tools > Convert Format.  Then click 'Options' and pick WAV as the new format.

I am using convert on the fly option, under Options->Media Network->Add or Configure DLNA servers. It correctly transcodes flac to wav, but if I am transcoding a 24 bit flac, it ends up as a 16 bit wav. Is there a way to make it transcode to a 24 bit wav?

Currently we always convert to 16-bit when converting to WAV for DLNA because this is the most universally supported bit depth.

Perhaps adding a 24-bit WAV option to the list of conversion formats would make sense?  Do you know for certain that the DLNA device you are targeting supports 24-bit WAV files?

Thanks.

Yes some do. The device I am working on does, it is the PSAudio bridge.

Do you happen to know if it supports 24-bit WAV files with a header, or if it expects headerless big-endian data like L16 (only named L24, I guess)?

Yes it supports it with a header. And requires the header currently.
