MJ 8.0.289 problems, help!
« on: June 01, 2002, 08:46:21 am »

I have enjoyed using MJ for about a year, and have been very happy using version 7.2. Noone can beat what MJ does.

Have the system and operating system requirements changes in 8.x vs 7.2?

I have tried various beta versions, including the most recent 8.0.289 and have had to return to 7.2 due to stability issues.

The usual symptoms are crashes in kernal, or the module name is blank.  This occurs with no plugins installed.  Most plugins that have worked in 7.2, simply don't work.

My system is an Athlon 1600, Via kt133 chipset, 512mb ram, using an RME 96/8 sound card, and a Matrox G400 video card. All with latest drivers.  I am running Win98SE, directx 8.1, and IE5.  The PC is a dedicated digital jukebox for my stereo and does not have other applications running on it.  The sound files are a mix of 8,500 APE files created using 3.96F, and about the same number of MP3 files.

Any recommendation on what should do to resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance for your help.

In general, 8.0.289 is now much more stable than 7.2.280.  Don't know what to say.

Maybe if you can provide more detail on when it is having trouble and exactly what happens.

Could be OS or hardware problems as well.

I assume you installed the full version of 8.0 and not just the upgrade.  Full is a 9MB file.

you might be able to use it on a slower computer

due to the file list is much quicker than before, and the encoding on the fly to mp3 is quicker also

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response.  The problems usually occur when the program is first started.  The filelist comes up, and before allowing any user interaction, a fatal error occurs that does not indicate what module failed.

A second problem area is in closing MJ, the program closes and on the desktop an error box appears. A reboot is necessary to clear the problem.

The third problem occurs when a plugin is initiated (if the plugin is able to start at all).  Some plugins, like adapt-x, will not start at all.

Would an upgrade to XP help?  What is the most stable OS for MJ?

Thanks again for your help.

Have you tried changing skins or disabling skins?

Try IE/Tools/Windows Update to see what Microsoft says.

We saw some sound card related problems on this type of Via system.  Check back about two weeks for the thread on Creative or Sound Blaster.  It was more than 10 messages.  Fiddling with the PCI latency setting in the bios was the solution, as I recall.

Hi,

I always run with skins off (the jukebox is in another room and is remotely controlled).

I will check the latency thread.

Any thoughts on a recommended O/S?

Thanks

I'm running MJ8 on Win2k and it's rock solid.

Abit BP6 motherboard (twin Celeron 533's, BX chipset, 768Mbytes)
Echo Mia soundcard (WDM drivers)

Like Lynn's, this box is dedicated to digital audio (pro tem).

The only problems I have (apart from stupidity) are reproducable bugs when acessing CDDB.

JimH...Nice job with the threading btw, it's good to see both cpus' at work for a change Next Page

From the least stable OS to the most stable OS, in my opinion.

Win98 (least)
Win98 SE
WinME but not by much
Win 2000
Win XP (most)

There are lots of variations of each of these.  Your mileage may vary.

I'd hate to have to put DOS versions on this list.  They wouldn't be at the "least" end.

Now, UNIX, there's an OS.

After I said that, I went to look at our UNIX(ish) machines.

Our FTP server (redhat linux):

5:34pm  up 146 days, 2load average: 0.04

meaning it has been running for 146 days, serving out thousands of files a day.

the load average is amazingly low, but the file most downloaded is in cache memory.

Our web server (IBM AIX on an RS6000):

05:36PM   up 57 days,  load average: 1.06

Agreed, and 400% or more faster than Windows

>> Now, UNIX, there's an OS.
maybe so, only played with it for a very short time, like OS2 Very Very Short Time.

The fastest machine I owned, for booting and general use, was a Morrow Designs, MD-11, running CP/M.  It would boot to a C> prompt in about 30 seconds, on a 10MB hard drive.  Wordstar in another 30 seconds.

We actually have accounting software customers who still use our accounting software, developed in the early '80's, on CP/M machines.  We haven't sold it since 1987, but they call every once in a while.

The Morrow machines were designed by George Morrow.  Like Adam Osborne and Gary Kildahl of Digital Research, brilliant pioneers who bit the dust of Microsoft.
