Alright guys.... I'm converting my media library over to MC16 from our Roku set up, and am hitting a bit of a snag. I had all my files organized by directory's, as that was the only way of getting ans sens of order. I had the Video Directory, then under that were ones for Action, Comedy, Exercise, Ect.. Then under exercise, I had it broken down by work out type, then each type had several files under it.

When I imported to MC16, it dumped all the files in one view, all 214 of them. I spent a hour and set everything by genre, and all seems well. But now I need to break it down even Further, for example, I have box sets of several TV shows that have 40+ episodes. I tried tags with the episode and series, but they still are just dumped in the genre section in theater view.

Any thoughts anyone???

You are going to need to set the media type and media subtype tags in order to get theater view to organize them properly. You can just select them all and change subtype to TV show and the media type to video (if it's not set automatically)


In addition, for automatic tagging of TV episodes (cover art, metadata, etc), some people have had luck using Sickbeard:

First off, I would check if MC does the job well enough on it's own. Check the Media Subtype field, and check if it's set correctly. If not, you have to do some manual work. Sickbeard can be a lifesaver I think. Check it out if you want things more automatic in the future.

If you wan to clean up your library right away, I would check out the Media Subtype field, and it's categories. If this is enough for you, use this to tag your collection. If it's not enough, you might have to create your own Video Subtype field.

After that is done, create a view with location as a field. Or create a pane view with directory? So that you can choose all files from the same directory at once. Select all media from the same logical structure that you are used to, and tag it with Media or Video Subtype. This job should be done in a few minutes if you have a good directory structure.

That's at least how I would have started.

Theater View is totally configurable.  You can create Views that will sort and filter your media any way you could possibly want.  As long as you tag the files, you can browse them using those tags.

By the way, the Fill Properties from Filename tool may have saved you a LOT of time, and still could help for the future.  If you have an organized filename and folder structure, that "encodes tags" in the structure itself, you can use this tool to extract the tags from the structure and apply it to whole batches of files at once.

So, if you have folders like this:

Video ->
      Media Sub Type (eg. TV Shows) ->
               Series ->
                        Season

And then the files are named like 4e06 - Some Episode Title.mkv.

You can use the Fill Properties from Filename tool like this:

Directory Rule: \Video\TV Shows\[Series]\[Season]
Filename Rule: [Season]e[Episode] - [Name]

And if you've selected all of the files in the <YOURDRIVELETTER>:\Video\TV Shows\ directory and hit apply, it'll fill all of those "tags" with the relevant data from the filesystem.

I intend (I'm still working on it) to post a Library Backup file here shortly that will include my Theater View setup for people to check out.  This might help you see what you can do with Theater View and Standard View to get it set up well for tagged video assets.

The default video views are set up assuming you haven't done much to tag your files.  If you've actually tagged them well, you'll need to define some custom views to get the most out of it.
