mp3 players
« on: May 29, 2002, 03:20:23 pm »

When I look for mp3 players, all I find are these little tiny things with headphones or big ol' things for home stereo use.  I can't find anything in between.  Doesn't anyone make a boom box that you can plug a little mp3 player into so that you can play your mp3s through its speakers?  Doesn't anyone but me dislike earbuds/earphones/headphones?

You could use a cassette adapter.
The output from my computer is going into the cassette adapter and then into the boom box. Same idea for a small mp3 player.

They make boomboxes now that read mp3 cds. Burn 150 songs and throw it in. Push play.

Output from your MP3 player into a pair of powered speakers - ie computer speakers.

Or for extra portability I recently bought a pair of battery powered speakers that fold down to 1.5 x 3.5 x 2.5 inches.
Not blasting sound by any means but very good for the size and quite adequate within, say 6ft.
They're Sony - $80.00 Australian - that's like $45US.

Those speakers go well with my other new toy which is a Phillips discman-like thing that reads MP3 and AAC data CD's.
Not sure why you would bother with solid memory (compact flash) MP3 player or even worse MiniDisc.

On a recent weekend away with 30 or so friends a girl I know, who is often (wrongly) boasting of having the very best technology, was extremely excited about the MD player she had bought.
"I can put 3 and half hours of music on one 4 dollar disc and it only takes 1 hour to record", she gushed.
"See this CD", I said.  "Cost me 30 cents and it's got 12 hours of digital music neatly sorted into Artist/Album".
"Wow"
"And do you know how long it took to put it on the disc?"
"No"
"5 Minutes"

As you can see I never, ever, ever, ever exagerate, ever, but it was a small triumphant moment.

Recommendation: 10 gig iPod   plus powered computer speakers (including subwoofer) = 2,000ish songs worth of beautiful music.  (And, yes, Virginia, you can use an iPod on a Wintel box...you just need to run Ephpod or XPlay.)

I just found the ideal answer to your problem.  Its a little device called the IROC!.  Its a small fm transmitter (smaller than a mouse) that plugs into the headphone jack of any type of mp3, cd or other device.  It broadcast a good signal for about 10ft, so all you have to do is set your mp3 player near the radio, set your radio to 89.1, 89.3, 89.5, or 89.7 (you select which one on the IROC).  I use it in the car with my Archos player, and out by the pool with my archos player and anyone's boom box.  I found its also really handy to take to parties where the music needs help!.  Best of all- its only about $30  - Radio Shack sells them and you can also get them on line.  Beats the heck out of adapters and cords!
