rate songs - several users on same database
« on: July 28, 2011, 07:51:37 am »

First of all - sorry for my English...

Situation:
I have a database which is used by 3 different users. The want to rate the songs with stars (5 stars = favourite song... / 1 Star don't want to hear it again... )

Problem:
My daughter likes Lady Gaga (song 1 and song 5 from album "xyz") -> she gives 5 stars to those songs
Dad likes Lady Gaga (song 3 and song 5 from album "xyz") -> want to give 5 stars to song 3 and song 5
Mum likes Lady Gaga (song 1 and 4 from album "xyz") -> gives 5 stars to those songs...

At the end - Lady Gaga, album "xyz" 5 stars on songs 1,3,4 and 5)

But Dad does not like song 1 (but got 5 stars from mum and daughter)...

Hope you got my problem.

Any solution for it?? How is it possible to rate songs if different users have different favourites?

What if I have to rebuild the database if I did forget to save it? Everything lost?
What if I intend to import those music into "itunes" will those ratins be available in apple software?

Thank you for your help.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but this is how I solved this problem in my house.

I created two new fields - Dad Rating and Mom Rating.  Then each person can rate them as desired.  Now, each person can create smartlists/ custom views, etc using thier own rating.

I can't really answer the other two questions, but adding custom fields for the ratings has worked well for me.

I do the same; separate fields for rating.  This also allows me to use a 1-10 rating instead of 1-5.  I configure my partner's PC only to show HER ratings, and mine to only show mine.

Thank you for the quick answers...

...good point - if I loose the database and it must be rebuilt - will those fields still be filled with the ratings? Dad or Mum...?

Is it possible to import those fields to itunes? Anybody an idea?

Thanks for your support!

Dad rating, Mom rating are what we call custom fields.
You have to create them yourself.
When you do, you have the option "store in file (if possible)"
If you check this one, all the ratings will be written as tags in de audio file.
If you loose your library, you can recover by re-reading the audio files.

Middle of the road programs like WMP or iTunes in general don't deal with custom tags.

Your best bet:
- make a custom tag
- select a song and populate the tag
- transfer to iTunes
- transfer to another PC (or remove the track from library and re-import)
Check if your data is carried over.

A bit more on custom tags can be found on my website: http://www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/SW/Players/MC14/Custom_tags.htm

Thanks for your help!

I try it like this:

"Comment" is supportet on MC16 and on itunes...

In this column, I will do it as follows:

Dad (John) = J
Mum (Mary) = M
Daughter (Sophie) = S

Dad and Mum like song, Daughter not -> comment will contain J5;M5;S1

Dad likes song - all other not -> column will contain J5

Smart Playlist with "contains J5" = all favourites of Dad...

This file will also be supportet in itunes...
