Interrupted handheld sync prevents subsequent syncing
« on: July 12, 2011, 06:12:29 pm »

(From here)

If MC is terminated in the middle of a sync (either due to it freezing, as in that thread but it could be for other reasons), the portable device will subsequently sync the library from scratch (= delete every file, or files are all reported as "delete on sync", then proceeds to sync every file back to the device.)

My handheld library was inconsistent and required deletion of all the music on my device and the JRInfo and JRState XML files in the root of my device before syncing from scratch again to achieve a consistent library.

Bump again please. This seems to be happening increasingly frequently now (even when the sync was successful prior)

Sync has generally been low priority here, and has not received too much attention.

In the end, I found that sync'ing was too fragile, and for really large syncs, locked out the MC interface and system for too long.  The sync list refresh also was taking about 30 seconds every time I did anything to the sync list, which made its use impractical.  Now, I just blast copy files from my conversion cache instead.

I found it more reliable to break the sync operation into constituent parts.

1) Do your own conversion, and maintain a conversion directory.
2) Sync smaller lists per sync, with a setting to not delete on sync.

Start fresh.
