Tagging Problem
« on: August 08, 2011, 01:14:05 pm »

I doubt this is related to MC exclusively but I am having a problem with id3 tags for a single artist. I have used Mp3tag to open the ACDC folder and scan all the albums (subfolders) and have ensured that BOTH Artist and Album Artist show as "AC-DC". I have been dealing with this one for a while. No matter what I do, including wiping the database/index and starting fresh, I get all these different artist variations for ACDC (AC-DC, AC,DC, AC/DC and more than one "AC DC". Anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this, or a solution?

Each app deals with tag case and punctuation differences in different manners.

In MC, open the Tag Action Window.

Select any two affected tracks.

Look at the Artist and Album Artist tags.  For each tag, if the tag is exactly the same for the two tracks, MC will show this single value.  If they are different, MC will show <varies>.  This will show the difference.

You can select all the AC/DC tracks, and enter a single value to make your tags all consistent.  Then Library Tools > Update tags (from library).

Now you can entirely clear/rescan your SBS library and should see consistent values.

Though, more useful than a library view could be MC's tag dump. It would show direct info of the tagged metadata.

Ok I might be getting closer. Using MC to edit the tags (say for the 54-40 artist which also shows duplicate/different names), and the doing the same for the AC-DC albums, clearing Library and re-importing did not change anything.

However, if I go into the 54-40 albums, they show in the MC detail pane as having the same artist name (54-40). However, in the MC "Audio" then "Artist" pane on the left, they show up as both 54-40 and 54,40 in the "Vorbis comment block?"

http://www.johnnystork.ca/content/files/MC-TagDump.jpg

So I highlighted one song in the album which shows as 54,40, and I see

Artist: 54-40
ENSEMBLE: 54,40
ALBUM ARTIST: 54,40
ALBUMARTIST: 54,40

There's no need to clear the library and re-import.

When you make changes in MC, you're changing internal database fields, which were imported when you imported the files.

MC will then update the file's tags after you make changes via the UI (provide you've left the default setting to Update files when file info changes).  You can manually tell MC to Update files (from library), and/or Update library (from files).

Your tags show you have two different names for [Artist] and [Album Artist].  Here's more info on ALBUMARTIST:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=60377.0

and ENSEMBLE isn't used in your default views, nor is it used by SBS.

ps. some of your photo links are not working here, as Alex B mentioned.
