Same album name showing up separated by artists on mp3 player
« on: August 15, 2011, 06:35:37 am »

I've asked this question in the past but because I am a bit slow despite all my attempts I have not been able to resolve this issue.  It's been ongoing for years.  I've also seen other people ask it and unfortunately I have not come across a good answer from them either.  So I figured I would ask again but this time show screenshots.

When I transfer files over to my mp3 player (android, samsung, sony, ect) my albums are all split up by artist.  Yet in j rivers media center it looks perfect.  People tell me that if I play with album artist the problem will go away but despite all my attempts all the music still shows as seperate.  I have taken some screenshots to give an example. Please visit http://imgur.com/a/IAJG7 to see the screenshots I have taken.

As you can see I am in albums but all the artists are split up.  How can I amalgamate all the same album together so that I can play an album with the click of a button.  Currently I have to add each one to a queue and it's a pain in the but.

Note: It doesn't matter what I use on my android.  I have used built in music player, winamp, ubermusic (that is the screenshots) and none of them store albums correctly.  I'm sure it's a an mp3 tag but I have no clue which one and what to change it too.

Let's look at the tags you have for 2 of the files from the Glen Campbell album shown in your screenshots.

In MC, select one of the tracks, open Action Window > Tag, and click on the line of text immediately under the Tag heading (it will  be the file type - duration - length).  Copy and paste those physical file tags into a reply here.  Do the same for one more track in the album.

I didn't notice that before but that is not the album cover for this particular CD.  I don't even own a Glen Campbell CD.  It's just one of the artists on the compilation.

Sorry, I just saw Glen's big smile, and thought it was supposed to be his album.

It is important to look at physical tags, since that is what other programs will see.  If you can, use the method suggested.

Showing Tags with Values hints that there is no Album Artist, hence the problem.

So, no tags indicate an album artist.

To add one in MC, select the album tracks for the album we're talking about.  In the Tag Action Window, enter the name you want to use as the Album Artist on your other players, such as Various.  Then Tools > Library Tools > Update tags (from Library).

MC will automatically use the fact that there is no Album Artist to sort albums under the term (Multiple Artists) when you browse via artists.  See:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Album_Artist_and_Album_Artist_%28Auto%29

for more info.

If your other players default to using only the Artist, then this is why you see tracks under each artist name.  If they need an Album Artist (or equivalent) to override this behavior, you'll need to add that tag.

Specifying an Album Artist will a) allow your players to use that value for grouping a compilation or various artists album, and b) will place the album under the given Album Artist in MC.

I can't believe it was that easy.  I couldn't update tags (from library) because it kept failing.  So I deleted all the music on my phone and readded it. It's all organized perfectly.  I can't believe I have been living with this problem for years now and the answer was that easy.  I'm not sure why over half my compilations didn't have that album artist field filled in.  But it's all in the past now.  On to better pastures.

It has been a good week for J. Rivers Media center.  Both this issue and http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=64584.0 have frustrated me to no end.  But with these modifications J. Rivers now does everything that I want.

Thanks for all the help.

When I had problems like this, I changed the folder structure on my phone or MP3 player.

Instead of transferring them to Music\Artist\Album I would have MC use Music\Album
