Aspect ratio issue
« on: July 04, 2011, 10:23:48 pm »

Hi,
I noticed that lately some avi's I've been working with haven't been displaying properly in 4:3. Then I noticed this around the same time:
Quote
16.0.112 (6/15/2011)
...
8. Fixed: Some videos were displaying with the wrong aspect ratio in Red October mode on Windows XP.

I'm using XP and the files display correctly with VLC on the same system.
Thanks for any help with this.

Would you be able to provide a sample file?

Thanks.

Found somewhere to stash it, and also confirmed the same behavior on a different PC (also XP).

I've been unable to reproduce this.

Is it still happening?

Thanks.

Thanks for looking into this.  Afraid so--nothing's changed on my side.  Keep in mind that what i'm seeing is that when i select 4:3 nothing appears to happen, whereas before it stretched the picture vertically so that it looked "right."

Pretty sure the version was .116 when i noticed this, and i've upgraded to .122/3 since.

It's strange because this came at the end of a long process of trying different methods of capturing and encoding, during which at some point i thought "boy, this sure looks stretched horizontally" and then realizing that if i told MC explicitly to use 4:3 rather than source, it looked right.  Suddenly when i was satisfied with my encoding process it stopped doing that.

Thanks again...

What do you get if you tell it to use the source aspect ratio instead of specifying 4:3?

Could you send a screenshot of how the video looks to matt at jriver dot com?

Thanks.

Easier to see than describe  :)  I was thinking i'd try to send screenshots, so i'll do that later tonight.  In general it just looks flattened (i was capturing at 756x480).

Thanks again for helping out with this!

OK, keep an eye on the shape of the hat:

Here's MC16 with source AR:

http://zurn.freeshell.org/sample-MC16-source.jpg

Then if i switch it to 4:3...

http://zurn.freeshell.org/sample-MC16-source.jpg

It's exactly the same.

However, here's source in VLC:

http://zurn.freeshell.org/sample-MC16-source.jpg

(about the same, if not the exact same frame.)

But here it is after switching to 4:3 in VLC:

http://zurn.freeshell.org/sample-VLC-4.3.png

See how his hat is more of an ellipse shape?  I've been using this scene as a point of reference because i noticed that shape difference.

What do you think?

bump.  This continues...any chance of a fix?  Or could it still not be reproduced?  I've reformatted my system since then (not for this reason) and it remains.  Just noticing it more because i'm capturing more and more from my archive.

I have not been able to reproduce this with Red October Standard or HQ.  When I pick 4:3, the output size is exactly 4:3.  I'm taking a screenshot, then measuring in an image editor.

Are you using Red October Standard?  Could you copy and paste your graph here (right-click a playing video)?

Thanks.

Just tried something i hadn't thought to try:  at work i use Win7, and it works correctly.   Remember this seemed to happen after a *fix* to another XP AR issue...in any case, here's the data from this system.  I'll get my home systems (both of which are XP) later.

That XP graph is not using Red October, since "Xvid MPEG-4 Video Decoder" is not a Red October filter.  Please test with Red October Standard or HQ.

You could also try Red October Standard with additional filters and select EVR as the default renderer.  This will happen automatically for up-to-date XP systems in a coming build.

Thanks.

Sorry--forgot that i'd been trying it with "Windows Merit Based."  I'm looking for EVR as an option but not finding it:  Options > Video > DS method: RO w/additional filters > then AVI as file type and JRiver Engine...but nothing matches that under renderer.

In any case, with just RO standard selected, here's the graph:

Once you pick "with additional filters" a new option appears in Options > Video called 'Default video renderer'.

You will need to have an up-to-date XP system for EVR to be a choice.

See the menu now, thanks, but it's still not an option.  "Up-to-date" as in...SP3 and auto updates are enabled...

Actually, nevermind:  Finally got a chance to try EVR on my HTPC (which is the only one i really care about anyway, tho i still don't see why my other XP is different), and that worked!  Now switching from Source to 4:3 makes it appear properly.

Thanks very much for figuring it out, Matt!
