Media Jukebox 8.0.282 RC
« on: May 24, 2002, 07:53:06 am »

Media Jukebox 8.0.282 RC (Release Candidate) is available:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaJukebox8.exe

Note that we released build 283 but it had a minimize problem, so it was removed.  The link here will download 282.  Sorry for the confusion.

Please make sure you reboot your PC if you prompted to do that by InstallWizard.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: Old style Media Jukebox 8.0 licenses (MediaJukebox8.rrg) will not work with this build.  They can be exchanged for a new one by providing your e-mail receipt (should have come from "buy-button @ jriver.com" ).  FORWARD TO music @ jriver.com.  Version 7 licenses CANNOT BE UPGRADED but will work with version 8.0.

Please back up your library and your license (version 7 licenses only; version 8 licenses can be restored from our web page -- see the FAQ for more info).

History:
1. NEW: Added Install Path to System Info.
2. Changed: Use of the original Media Jukebox 8 license has been discontinued--see above.
3. Fixed: When selecting browse in File location from CD Copy window, main window would come on top.
4. Fixed: MJ would not handle display plug-in failure correctly.
5. Fixed: Restore of V7 license did not work.

Player window re. shuffle on/off graphics.

When the mouse hangs at this "window" in player window, it says whether or not shuffle is on, but I find it confusing
that the graphic illustrates the opposite of what the text says.

The text says the actual thing.

let me know if I am not making myself clear.

Re. update to CDDB:
Just put in a audio cd that wasnt recognized in CDDB. I said yes to submit new, and entered all the data, and hit OK.
CDDB still didnt recognize the cd. don't know whether or not this belongs to MJ or CDDB.

Bug in 8.0.265beta - CD names not shown correctly
If you need more info: albrecht-waldbronn@web.de

Still the process of reading the content of MP3 CDs is not real good. If
a CD, that shows up in the explorer as 'Complete_CDs_01', is read, the
section File Location shows (0x5601E92A) and the section CD and DVD media a
CD named 'unassigned'. If I add mores CDs, it still shows a single
'unassigned' folder instead of the real name of the CD. Out of 5 CDs
'Complete_CDs_01' through 'Complete_CDs_05' only the last showed with
correct name under CD and DVD media.

To show the content of a specific CD is therefore not straight forward!

Can this be changed?

My system: NT 4.0 with all SPs, 500 Mhz PIII, 198MB RAM

Additional text for Matt:

Today I installed the RC 279, it still shows the same, see attached
media.jpg. It's with the build-in CD/DVD drive and also on the external HP
CD-Writer Plus (7500 series). The windows explorer shows correct
information, see attached media2.jpg.

Is there the possibillity, that MJ is in trouble because I have the drives
named Y and/or Z?

> Sorry I don't have a better answer. Hopefully manually renaming your data
> CD's in MJ won't be too much of a hassle....

The rename item is grayed-out when I tried to rename the CD. I clicked right
on the 'unassigned'.

I tried it now on my son's PC (P3/900Mhz with Windows ME). The same effect!
So it seems it's not specific hardware or operating system related. I burned
a CD with a shorter naming "JCash. Format ISO Data Mode 2/XA with Nero
5.8.2. The same problem.

Something you can do with this information?

MJ asked me From RRG Or Internet

Since the rrg file is no longer used in MJ8 i think this message box, and option controls could be removed.

Media Server problem (a new one)

Until b278 I cannot play song with Media Server (even if the client is on the same machine). With b282 it is worse as Media Server loops !

> ready for another connection
> private sharing thread started
> sharing thread exiting
> received a connection
> ready for another connection
> ...

I have to stop the share (Media Server File/Share) to stop the loop.

Michel,
Make sure you are using 282 on both machines.

Someone reported this in the 279 thread:

> it does work ... unless you try to play a track with the "´" in it. The server won't serve those files with auth on or off.

tell windows to start MJ minimized and set MJ to minimize to the system tray. when you open the MJ window the only parts that display are the title bar, menus, and status bar at the bottom. nothing is there in between.

I have had trouble in the last couple of builds getting the scheduler to work for recording. Basically, I create a timed recording, then when the time comes, the app is brought to focus but no recording begins. This has been the case for the last couple of builds.

More information re new licensing arrangements, please.
I do not have a buy button receipt as the web based email service I was using at the time has gone under.

It surely is a customer's golden rule of E-trade that you never pay for services whose only point of redemption is the WWW.  You go the URL one day and its "Error 404 - File Not Found".  And you know you have been credulous and naive.

I have an email from Gately with a URL (https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi)
and a Registration Code.

From Gately's email of May 2...
"Your old RRG file license will continue working".
Only fleetingly it seems.

Now I know how very touchy you are about this, how easily "insulted", and I have no desire to cast aspersions of any sort, but I am unhappy about the new licensing arrangements on the basis that, as I understand it, my only avenue of license restoration will be a URL.

If I use the code at that URL, will that diminish the precious number of restores remaining to me??
I'm having some problems with new hardware/old OS relationships and could use up the new quota fast on recent form.

From above,
"...They can be exchanged for a new one by providing your e-mail receipt (should have come from "buy-button @ jriver.com" ). FORWARD TO music @ jriver.com
Does that mean I can download the new equivalent of an RRG file and restore my license as and when I like.  (which was the agreement into which I entered).
Possibly a moot point since I don't have the buy button receipt.
Can I instead send you my RRG file for exchange?

Please advise.

PS:  As Shelly says, the Download Link is "Error 404 - File Not Found"

Don't worry.  We've said multiple times that we will reset the restore count on release of MJ.  You will not get less than you did before.

Such hyper-sensitivity is just astonishing.

But I suppose, the pimply kid is always sensitive about acne, the fat girl is always touchy about being overweight...

After I tippy-toe courteously around your known difficulties with criticism, I get glibness and flippancy.

Whatever.

Everything you need to know about the new licensing should be covered in the FAQ.  If it isn't, please let us know and we can add it.

We're still making changes, so if you can find a flaw, we'll fix it.

I say:  Had I known about this bait & switch, I may not have paid so quickly.  Just the principle, that you do not really SELL the license, you rent it, a la Win XP.  We use the license, as long as you pay your electric, bill, ISP bill and do good backups.  Not a relationship I entered into, few months ago.  Please register a vote of discontent.

Hope this goes over well, with the computing "general public".

after doing a digital secure rip, the ripping quality window appears, showing the quality percentage of the rip.
When marking a section where rereads had to be done, the "play section" becomes an option.
When hitting "play section" an error prompt appears saying "select files to play"

Durgame,
my understanding is (correct me if I'm wrong) that you can simply save a copy of the email(and your reg key), as a BACKUP (I think the concept has been around the "compting general public" for a little while now). As for the whole deal about the elecrtricity bill/ISP bill:  SAVE TO DISK -or some other non-volotile form of storage, say even a CDR!

As for the "what if my ISP goes down and I can't connect to the net?, -I wont be able to restore my license!"  well this is simply pedantic garbage.
I know if I was cut off for more than a week I'd go nuts!
Solution: If your ISP goes down, GET ANOTHER ONE!

If your car stopped working would you just walk everywhere, and then complain to the people you bought you car stereo from saying "I can't use it because I can't use my car"? No, you would get the car fixed ASAP.

perspective.

Come on. Give the guys at JRiver a break. The sell their software for peanuts, and go to greater lengths than anyone else with the license restoration efforts.

(p.s. -I didn't mean to rant, -got a little carried away, sorry Next Page )

Media Server: finally !

> Someone reported this in the 279 thread:

> it does work ... unless you try to play a track with the "´" in it. The server won't serve those
> files with auth on or off.

I use the following scheme d:\music\ compressed[ARTIST]\{ALBUM}[ARTIST] {ALBUM} TRACK# - NAME.

If there is an iso-latin character (éèçàù...) in the path of the file (including the file name itself ?), Media Server is not able to serve it.

As I have a lot of latin (french, portuguese, spanish,...) songs, Media Server is unusable with this bug for me. Is it possible to correct it for v8 ?

Another annoying little bug related to Media Server: "automatically start sharing when program starts" option is not taken in account,  that is to say you need to start the share manually (menu File/Share). In older builds (weeks ago), it was ok.

When I open a video file (avi, mpg) from the menu "File>Open Media File" and "Playing now" is not selected, then you can hear the sound, but not see the video. You have to select "Playing now" to be able to see the video. I feel, in this case, MJ should automatically switch to "Playing now".

Also, when you double-click on a video file in Windows explorer, you can see the same effect as above, but also if the MJ window is behind the Windows Explorer window or minimized on the system tray, it does not pop to the front and get the focus, so that you will not be able to see the video file from the beginning.

Not really bugs, but small inconveniences!

Hi there,   since loading MJ 8.0.280-282 I have started to encounter some problems..

1. If I try to play something from windows explorer, MJ starts, but will not play. If I right click and select PLay, MJ starts, but doesn't play, If I double click the file the same happens. If I right click and choose Media Jukebox -> Play, it works fine. If MJ is already open, it plays fine.

2. The command line argument "C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Media Jukebox.exe" /Connect m01p://myserver.com:81
has stopped working. I had it working fine previously.

3. I have MJ installed on more than one machine(1 is my music server and 2 running MJ normally) , using only one paid for v8 licence...I was under the impression you allowed this, but now I am getting warnings on one of the machines that you are sending the cops around, as well as a wonderful disco on my desktop....have you changed your policies regarding this? This machine was running MJ fine until I installed the lastest versions.
from the FAQ
>Multiple machines in your house can use the same install key if you install on them in the first two weeks after >Next Pageurchase or restore. After that, you'll need to use one of your restores.

Thanks

Stu, make sure you have 282 on both machines.  One license will work.

peleton,

Seems you do not know how the license works.

Read my post again.  I'm talking about R.River ISP bill - meaning "as long as they stay in business".  Software companies
fall every day, in case you did not know.

> As for the "what if my ISP goes down and I can't connect to the net?,
> -I wont be able to restore my license!" well this is simply pedantic garbage.

You clarly missed my point in its entirety.

Here we go, another car analogy.  I'd still have the car.

Here we agree on something.  Great piece of software.
Personally, I would have paid twice the price for MJ8,
but once I do, I want to OWN the license.

I like to be able to use the software in perpetuity,
regardles if JRiver is in business or not.  As it is,
if my disk crashes and I have to re-install, I have to
connect to JRiver server to get the license AGAIN.

I agree absolutely with that. MJ is a very good software, with a good support. I am ready to pay it a right price* but I would like not to depend on JRiver after to my licence.

* I bought the licence already.
