Editing and Tagging
« on: September 27, 2011, 05:12:22 pm »

All I am trying to do is tag my music in whatever way so that when I play my files through my network, the song, album, artist, and artwork show up on my Onkyo TX-NR808.

So what I've done is download JRiver. Then I put one album by an artist on a jump drive. I told jriver to only look for music on this drive. It pulls up the album. I right click and select 'tag' and begin doing so. Then after I'm done, I right-click> Library Tools> Update Library (from tags). Awesome right? No! Everything looks good but in windows explorer nothing has changed and when I plug my USB into my receiver it doesn't display any of the information.

What I want is the right way to save the tags so that the song, album, artist, and artwork will display no matter where I play it. How do I do this?

All help appreciated...

What is the file format? Which library field(s) did you tag?

In general MC saves tags to the files automatically. "Update Tags (from library)" is not needed. Though you can disable all tag writing in options: Tools Options > General > Importing & Tagging > Update tags when file info changes (uncheck to disable tag writing). When tag writing is disabled all new or changed metadata is stored only in the databse (aka MC's library).

If the file format is uncompressed Wave or AIFF you would need to enable tag writing in the Wave & AIFF plugin's options: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/WAV_%26_AIFF_Tagging . By default Wave & AIFF tagging is disabled because only very few programs and devices support it (Windows Explorer doesn't and I'd be surprised if a HT receiver would support it.)

Then after I'm done, I right-click> Library Tools> Update Library (from tags).

In case this is not just a typo, I'll point out the command you should have used was...

Update Tags (from library)...

—assuming it wasn't set to happen automatically.

In addition to the file format being a possible cause for tags not being written, I wonder if it's possible MC doesn't have permission to write to the jump drive. :-\

Update Library (from tags).

Oh, I didn't see that (obviously I saw what I expected). "Update Library (from tags)" forces a file re-read. It is useful if the tags have been edited outside MC after the file was imported -- if Auto-Import is not set to "Update for external changes" or the external tagger is set to preserve the file "Last Modified" time stamps (some taggers have this option).

The file formats are .flac and .mp3. I tagged album, album artist, artist, date, 'image file' says inside file, and year. Than I right-clicked on the album, chose cover art> get from internet.

Why would I disable all tag writing? I don't want it to store it MC's library only, I want it to change it in the file, where any computer would read it all the same.

That's okay if MC doesn't write it to a jump drive because I was just testing, but all my music is stored on my NAS; surely it will write the tags there?

So what is the easiest and best way to make sure my tags are written correctly (so I could rule that out as possible problem to why the HT Receiver isn't displaying)?

MC has a so called tag dump. It can show the tag contents of a selected file directly from the file (not from the database).

Select a file, go to Action Window > Tag, click the first line that that shows the file format, duration and size. It is a link to the "Detailed format information" window that displays the tag dump and additional format info. In some cases you may need to refresh the format window by temporarily selecting a different file after making a tag change.

The tag dump explained: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=59513.msg430491#msg430491

Regarding tagging in general you can tag the common fields to a bunch of files at once if you select them all before making the tag changes. You can also tag files directly in list views (like you would edit an Excel table): http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=57857.msg392133;topicseen#msg392133
