WDLXTV Plus - Subtitle labels are garbage characters
« on: November 08, 2011, 09:51:27 pm »

Using a WDLXTV Plus downstairs.  If I play back movies directly from the device (browse file share and play), the subtitle labels are 'correct' (English = 'English').  If I push content to it over DLNA from MC, the labels are garbage characters (English = '8u*' or similar).

Any thoughts on what the issue is or how to correct?

What's the source material?
Are you transcoding?? (what are your DLNA server settings for video conversion)
What format are your subtitles in?

thanks...

Source material is both BluRay and DVD ripped to MKV (mostly with MakeMKV).
Not transcoding.
Subtitles are embedded in the MKV file (stream copy by MakeMKV).

Ugh, if they are burned in, it really seems like a firmware bug on the WD.
My guess is they are probably using VLC when you pull it with samba and then going through libupnp when we push it and handing the resulting stream off to something else to display. Fortunately it seems they are pretty good at firmware updates, I see mine updated every few months..

It is not the display of the subtitle content, it is the display of the subtitle 'name' that is wrong when you go into options to chose the subtitle stream to display.  Subtitle content is also messed up in that it only flashes up on the screen for less than a second when coming to the device from MC.

The subtitle name is embeded in the mkv as well.
Are you quite certain you have video conversion off?
You can test this by putting the URL you see in the Media Network status window when the file is being read into a browser.
The browser should pull exactly the same content as the original file on your PC.
The DLNA content directory doesn't contain anything regarding the subtitles other than the file name if they are .srt's or .sub's and since the WD doesn't use those it wouldn't make a difference anyway.

Double checked and everything is set to not convert.  One thing I noticed was that in the Advanced options, none of the boxes were checked.  I deleted the server and added it back from scratch leaving the defaults, but changing everything back to never convert.  That fixed the subtitle issue, but now it doesn't like MKV DVD content (MPEG2 MKV).  The WDLXTV plays them back fine from a file share, but not from DLNA.

Changed the configuration to uncheck 'DLNA' in advanced and now all file play again.  If I play the file over DLNA by browsing the server from the WDTV, subtitles are fine.  If I push the file to the device from MC (using the My River app), the subtitles are broken.

With DLNA unchecked, there are no DLNA flags sent to the renderer. The DLNA flags describe the content in more precision to the renderer (like telling the renderer which codecs are inside of the MKV container, what the bitrates are, etc).  Without those set, the renderer has to parse the file on it's own. I'm guessing the WD doesn't like the specificity we're giving it.

What are the values in the database compression field from one of these MKV files? What's the file extension?
