Further Client/Server development?

Just moving some comments to a new thread  ;)

--- Quote from: Mars on October 21, 2011, 07:32:46 pm ---What about the ability of accessing and managing the library (Importing, Tagging, Renaming, Dragging'n Dropping, ...) simultaneously from any PC at home (or outside home)?

Maybe with an actual Client - Server system, with full control of the Data Base from the client side based on User/Permissions policies . Just like in many companies' systems, where DDBB are stored in the Server, usually located in a separate room and only manipulated by the IT's for maintenance, and data are introduced and accessed from the client work stations. I would reproduce the same scheme at Home, with my HTPC being the Server, hidden in a cabinet by the TV, even without physical keyboard or mouse, where Data Base would be stored and managed from the rest of the Client devices (Laptops, PC's, Tablets, Phones...).

Or maybe with a Web interface (call it WebTag as an addition to WebPlay and WebRemote) also based on User/Permissions policies, with the ability of editing the Data Base (Importing, Tagging, Renaming, ...) from any other device.

I guess database real time multi users updates must be difficult to implement. It may require an external database engine, such as PostgreSQL ?

Yes, if possible, a better client/server-model would be very nice, I am still not using the server-mode, as I cannot use more than one server-hosted library on MC :(

glynor:
Mars, just a little friendly advice... You should probably:

1) Try the current system thoroughly.
2) Post specific comments on exactly what doesn't work for you, what you'd like to see added, and why.

General "it should have moar serverosity" comments aren't going to amount to much.

The current Library Server system CAN "feed the library" from the client side, even on MC16.  There are some limits, but there have even been improvements on this already in MC17 (for example Send To -> External and Drag-Drop both now, apparently, work from the Client side on MC17 with current beta builds).

I'm someone who is VERY concerned over the utility of the server system.  For example, this IS something I'd love to see eventually:

That's a specific request for something the current system can't do (serve more than one library at a time).

I realize your old threads may have contained more context, but expecting the busy developers to (A) remember, or (B) dig through a deep thread when they have other stuff to do, is asking for failure.

flac.rules:
Well, I guess i could give it more context, however the usefulness should be pretty apparent. I guess we all agree that its useful to have the server-way to do things as an option (library can be centrally stored, easier to handle central libraries accessed by many computers and so on). Being that the server-model is useful, I would like to use it, however another useful feature is several libraries (like one for me, one for my wife), the benefits of combing the two should be clear, because today, if you use both those to features, you're forced too choose between them.

glynor:
To be clear, Elvis... I quoted you because you DID make a specific, clear, concise feature request.  Multiple Library support on the Server.

I have no way of knowing, though I suspect they'd argue that feature is a bit of a niche request (which makes it fall into "perhaps someday").  I agree though, there are many use-cases where having the ability to simultaneously serve more than one library could come in very handy (separate library for the spouse or kids being the first thing that pops to mind, or maybe a "secret" library for that content you don't want the kids to access).

I actually DO this at work, but I use a couple VMs running on the same machine to pull it off, which isn't practical for a home user.
