Are we supposed to always run MC as Admin?
« on: October 24, 2011, 01:55:43 pm »

If I do not run as Admin, I get arbitrary UAC elevation prompts. Sometimes right when I start, sometimes when I navigate to the TV device. Not always, though. If I run it as Admin, I obviously only have to answer the one prompt and I'm done. Is this recommended?

Thanks.

This generally shouldn't happen.  I never see UAC prompts with MC unless it is installing a new build, and I don't run it explicitly as an admin.

However, I know there is some weirdness with TV Tuner support, especially certain devices, which may be involved (since you mentioned opening the TV Tuner device), so someone else might need to comment.

Generally, though, no.  And if you are seeing UAC prompts during general use of MC, non-TV-tuner related, then something is wrong.

This isn't normal.

Click for more details on the UAC prompt.  What is the full command line it's showing?

I now think this is due to me alternately running MC17 and MC16 (because I have the TV Guide set up different in each of them and am trying to figure out the advantages of each). If I repeatedly run one of them, I don't get the UAC prompt on the subsequent runs. I'll post again if I find I am getting hit with prompts when sticking to MC17.

I've seen this before in prior beta periods where I was still using both versions.  It is likely the shell integration.  Turn it off in one, or both, of them and then close MC normally.  Reboot.  It should probably go away.

Switching between versions will require UAC elevation to register controls.  This is necessary for a few COM-based components, like the TV reading filter, etc.

There you go.

I thought, maybe, I'd noticed it before even with shell integration disabled, but I wasn't sure at all.
