Media Center Says Video is Bad But It Plays Just Fine in WM11
« on: November 09, 2011, 05:11:06 pm »

I have some .avi files (of unknown origin / codec) that MC16 (set to RO Standard) won't play reporting "The media types of the selected files are not supported for playback (<none>)".

These files play just fine in Windows media player.

They also play back just fine on my office PC (\\Funkyboss) in Media Center set to RO Standard as well.

So I've done something to bork out this one particular install on this PC (it's known as \\HTPC) but for the life of me can't imagine what it was.

So I guess I'm just looking to be pointed in the right direction or some advice on which button to push next :)

Here's what MC says about the system:

It might the developers if you installed this utility:

http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

and ran it on the video that is giving you trouble and then post the results.

Ok so here's the report from one of the files that MC WILL import and play:

To me they appear to be encoded the exact same way and are the exact same kind of video. Only MC claims the file Super Knockers! is bad.

Remember all of these files import and play back just fine on my office PC which is almost the exact same PC as this one.

jmone gave me this advice for resetting the red october stack when it gets broken.

Try this and see if it unborks your RO so it can play the video like the first pc can.  If one copy of MC can do it, the other should too.

You can force MC to redownload the filters it uses by going to C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 16\Plugins and deleting the relevant folder.

This is an alternative to uninstalling and reinstalling MC.

Hope this helps.

UPDATE:  9.21.13

The ultimate cause of the bad files was the auto import feature. I rip and encode source material on a different computer from the playback device. When transferring files over the network auto import would pick them up while they were still in transit and banish them forever as bad files. The information below covers how to clean up the mess.

I have no idea if this bug still exists in later versions of MC.

- Wer's advice above did the trick. However upon a little more digging I found other files in the system using different codecs but with the exact same problem. So I just deleted all of the folders save the one that was clearly for MP3s.

- Auto import still reads the files as bad. Any file encoded with the same codec that RO is freaking out about will be listed as bad by auto-import and won't come in.

- HOWEVER, manually importing the file / folder WILL import and playback the file.
