what is the best way to keep external files synced?
« on: December 03, 2011, 12:33:19 pm »

my files are located on a unraid server and I keep them organized externally (not from within JMC)
as I am currently still in the process of organizing - renaming folder, moving folders, fixing tags, adding cover art, etc. - there are still often changes.
it is unclear to me what practice is best to keep JMC syncing from the files.
e.g get tags if the changed, remove dead links, get cover art from the folder

current media import settings are
x build thumbnail
x getcover art
x update for external changes
fix broken links (protect network files)

with the current settings i notice double entries in the library when folders have been moved, with one of the entries having dead links

Change "fix broken links (protect network files)" to "fix broken links: Yes"
This will fix your problem
Note: if you delete tag fields (not change) changes don't show up unless you proceed a fresh new import

Do so. Remember: this happens only if you delete tags external.
I've noticed this behaviour when I deleted/changed tagfields with MC on another machine than usual.

Wouldn't doing a "Update Library (from tags)" fix that without the need for doing a fresh new import?
I think that should work even if the field has been deleted or added rather than just changed.  But I'm not sure.

Ah, MC is being conservative and not deleting tag fields that disappear mysteriously.  That's a good thing.  Means you'd have to work hard to lose data accidentally.

I always try to do as much tagging and file management within MC as I can.  Keeps MC and the database happy.  I still use external tools when those tools do something I need.

Exactly.

If you intend to delete a field and want it cleared on all of your files, it is best to do a search for that field first, select-all, clear the tag, and then delete the field from MC.
