Playing JTV recordings via DLNA server
« on: December 09, 2011, 06:51:11 am »

My wife recently purchased an iPad so I've been playing with getting the iPad and MC /dlna working.

I'm testing media:connect (the free version) and it's companion app flex:player and have the dlna server set to convert to MPEG/DVD Stream for unsupported formats.

So far I've been able to play my avi, mkv, ripped DVD's and even my ripped Blurays!  But I can't play any TV recordings in JTV format.

I seem to remember some work being done a little while back on JTV playback for Gizmo (but I may be wrong) and if so, should the DLNA server be able to convert/stream JTV files also?

Thanks
Richard

How is your DLNA server video conversion set? (never, always, when necessary)?

At then moment it's set to convert unsupported formats as media:connect seems to support a number of formats itself, like mpeg, mkv, avi.

Have now changed to "Always convert" and JTV files work.

When looking at the logs I can see when it's set to "Convert unsupported" the server is sending JTV files to the player.

So are the "supported formats" something I can set on the server or are they negotiated between the server/player internally?

Thanks

IMO - JTV should always be treated as "unsupported" over DLNA as no other device will play it (and hence converted if the setting is "Convert unsupported"

The convert unsupported converts everything not required by the DLNA spec to the selected encoder. For video that means everything that isn't a mpeg2 with either mpeg2 or ac3 audio (except for the Xbox 360 which isn't really DLNA and doesn't support mpeg2).

When you select the PS3 or WMC compatibility flags it's fine tuned to allow formats known to be playable on those platforms to be passed through without conversion as well.

So, that means your JTV files should have been converted when the conversion was set to convert unsupported.

We'll check it out here...

It is the JTV container (not the Video / Audio stream) that will be the issue - it just needs remuxing
