Feature request: Filter Panes "2 exclusion functions"
« on: December 16, 2011, 06:31:50 am »

Hi!
I am not sure if one can address features requests on the forums but I have been using MC for a while now and I really believe it is the best media player out there. However I believe some improvement of the Filter Panes could be made.

1) Tag1 AND tag2 instead of tag1 OR tag2

When you click on some tag in the Panes (e.g. Artist: The Beatles), all the files that contain this tag are shown. If you select an additional tag (ctrl+click) in the same Pane (e.g. Artist: The Rolling Stones), the songs by both bands for instance are shown. But you know that already.

Now things become more complicated for tag fields that allow multiples values. This is the case for a field like Moods. One song can be both Happy and Energetic. Let's say I want to listen to songs both Happy and Energetic. If I select these two tags in the Moods Pane what I will get are all "Happy songs" and all "Energetic songs", and not only the songs that are both.

I know that the expected result can be obtained via the use use of search expressions but I believe that the ability to do it directly via the Filter Panes would be easier to use.

2) Exclude songs that contains selected tag

Also, one might also want to exclude some songs from the list below the Filter Panes. Let me explain. I have selected The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in the Artist Pane. Hence all songs by these bands are displayed. But I want to exclude songs which mood is sad for example. It would be great if I could simply click on Sad in the Moods Pane (with an alt+click maybe) so that all sad songs are removed.

I have been looking for a software that would have functionality but couldn't find any. Thus I think such features would be a real advantage over other media players.

If the developers think the idea is good, I will be glad to help.

Best regards,

i like point 2. it has been requested also before.

point 1 can be done already. and the result is better, imho, then what you propose. just make two moods panes. when you choose happy. the second moods pane gives all moods that 'combine' with happy. choose energetic and you get those songs.

just make two moods panes.
To clarify some, you can also do what you are looking for in a single pane. For a given pane view go to the Customize View menu, select the appropriate pane in the left hand box, choose Edit. Now look for the "Matching:" section at the bottom. Choose "Match All" instead of "Match Any".

I also think an exclusion option in the panes would be nice.

Thanks for the two workarounds gappie and bunglemebaby. I will test these ideas.

Anyone else interested in the "exclusion feature" ?

For the ones interested, I have found a decent workaround that will create an extra column in which you can set as many exclusions as you want. Selecting several items will narrow your results.

Go to your Panes view
View > Customize view

Add... (this will add a new column in your panes)

Set Settings: Matching > Match All
Choose Type : Search list > Add... (this will add an exclusion)

Under the Rules tab select for example : Moods / Is not any / Choose which moods to exclude

Hope this helps a bit.
