PCM2704 USB DAC & JRiver MC 17
« on: January 01, 2012, 12:54:37 pm »

Hey, all! I'm using MC 17.0.60 in Windows 7 x64 with a BB/TI PCM2704 based USB DAC and I noticed something interesting in the player's settings. The DAC is limited to 16 bits and 48 KHz, but in MC17 the output bitdepth is set to 24 bits and it actually works that way. It's a little confusing, since the bitdepth setting is supposed to deliver whatever bitdepth is selected through it directly to the playback device. In my case the device can't accept anything more than 16 bits but it does work with 24-bitdepth set in the player. However if I try to change the sample rate to anything above 48KHz, the DAC doesn't work and the player suggests a setting of 24-bit/48KHz output. So the simple question is - what is going on here?

P.S. The USB DAC is NOT set as a default device in Windows. Output mode in MC is WASAPI Event Style, the device buffer is 100ms and the player has exclusive access to the DAC.

It sounds like the driver accepts 24-bit input.  The driver may downsample to 16-bit if the hardware requires it, or maybe the hardware really can handle 24-bit input.

Regardless, I'd recommend setting Media Center to 24-bit in this case.
