Need advice on ripping DVD
« on: January 15, 2012, 01:56:56 pm »

I have alot a DVD's I want to rip.

Right now I have about 150 movies in MC, some are AVI, some MKV, and others.

I want to make a desicion on how to rip my DVD's for the future.

I have knocked it down to two methods, either I want to use MC to rip,
or MakeMkv.

MC is the easyest way to do it, but are there any downsides with this method.

Please help with this.

I prefer to rip the movie only (no ads, previews, bonuses, etc.). I use MakeMKV beacuse MKVs are rendered by MadVR, whereas ripping to Video_TS format uses EVR. In my opinion MadVR does a better job with the DVD material. I also like MKV container becuase it is "neater" (one file versus many).

Previously I bought a program called CloneDVD (by Slysoft) to rip my DVDs to Video_TS format. What's nice abount CloneDVD is that it has a built in player window so you can see extactly what your selecting (which tracks have the movie) to rip. This makes it easier when there are multiple selections all about the same size such as with multiple Episodes or Directors Commentary on the same disk. With CloneDVD can easily figure out what is the correct track to rip. Now that I save in MKV, I still rip the movie to Video_TS then use MakeMKV to convert that to MKV. It's a two step process but its easy and fast. However, you can still get the job done just using MakeMKV alone.

If you want to save the entire DVD disk (everything) you can just use AnyDVD (which you need anyways to remove copy protection). I never used JRiver MC to rip with so I can't comment on that process.

Thanks for the advice.

I think I will go for MakeMkv, as you say it will make one file
with just the movie and nothing else.

And MC wont remove the copy protection, didn't think about that.
MakeMkv will remove the protection.

Now I just need the time to get it done, that is however not that easy  :P

Thank You

I recommend just ripping DVD's to video_ts folder.

It takes about five minutes to rip and 1 minute to tag.
You are left with special features, subtitles, and choice of 2 channels or surround

Ripping with MC is the same as using anydvd, but i think MC may get movie info from the internet when you user it.
I can't be sure, I don't have internet.

If you choose this method you can convert your DVD rip to mkv later, where if you choose mkv and don't like it, you have to re rip.
