Short version of problem: When I add an entire artist's discography to playing now, by clicking Play, they are added so that all track #1s plays, then #2s and so forth. I would prefer to add them as whole albums according to how I have them sorted (i.e Album A 1-10, B 1-10, etc.) How must they be sorted to allow this?

I presently have it set-up where my top view is Artists, and it is sorted by Album Artists then Albums. When I click on Albums, it takes me to the Albums for that particular artist where they are sorted by Year, grouped by Year-Album and sorted within group by Disc# then Track#.

Any help is appreciated.

Edited to add: When the files are addes, they are added by track# so it's all #1, then #2, etc. and those tracks are added by alphabetical order of the albums (i.e Album A1, Album B1, Album C1, AlbumA2, Album B2, Album C3).

I'm trying to reproduce this.

Can you describe the view type (I was thinking it was a Category view, but you mention Group By which isn't available in Category views).

Can you also describe each setting exactly for the top pane or category, and the file list?

Top View:
Categories: Shown in Order: Album Artist, Album
Sort By: Album Artist, Year-Album
Click files: Grouped by Year-Album; sorted by Disc#, Track #

Click Albums:
Album View:
Categories: Shown in Order: Album Artist, Album
Sort By: Year
Click files: Grouped by Year-Album; sorted by Disc#, Track #

I changed to:

It now adds albums as a whole, but addds the albums in alphabetical order, rather than date order as I have them sorted. An improvement, though I would still prefer to have them added as I have sorted them.

I'll note up front, I'm on MC17.

I think I followed your directions, and find that albums are added in exactly the order the are grouped/sorted in the category list, and file list.

That said, it could be because I explicitly set my own sort order for the root Audio view.

Right click Audio, and Customize.
Click Set rules for file display...
Under Modify Results, set your Sort by to:

  Album Artist (auto) (a-z)
  Album (a-z)
  Disc # (a-z)
  Track # (a-z)

OK your way out, and overwrite the view.

I believe you are probably encountering some issue with the Default sort order which I and rick.ca have commented on in past threads.  Once the sort order is explicitly defined, you should get the correct behavior.

I tried it and it sorts correctly and shows correctly but continues to add to playing now in alphabetical order of the albums rather than by oldest to newest as I have my sort set. I may be doing it wrong but it is what it is I suppose. Thanks again for the advice.

Final thought for now - you are sorting your Playing Now list by Sequence number, rather than something else?

I am. I checked to make certain I hadn't set up some method of sorting. It's funny, the albums will show in date order in the tree, in file view, etc., but it still adds to Playing Now in alphabetical order. At least it plays a whole album at a time now.
