Dual CPU = Encoding
« on: May 14, 2002, 09:56:19 am »

I was wondering

If you had a dual 2.0Ghz cpu computer using lame to rip, is it a faster than a 2.0Ghz Single Cpu?

Probably depends on which CPU is used for encoding. Since there is only one thread it won't double in speed.

I have a couple of PIII dual processor systems and apps / cpu intensive processes do run faster in the second CPU - i.e. the one which isn't running most of the O/S.

KingSparta -- Which OS do you have?

If you have Win95, Win98, or WinME then I believe the answer is definitely NO.

If you're using WinNT, Win2K, or WinXP then the answer might be yes.

I Would Be Using Windows XP Pro

I was debating On A 2.53ghz chip or a CPU with Dual 2.0Ghz chips

or what ever is latest, and was wondering if it was worth it getting a Dual 2.0Ghz over maybe a 2.53ghz

The LAME exe (which is the version MJ uses) is indeed single threaded so it won't take advantage of a second CPU.  In fact, I'm monkeying with the source right now to see if it's even practical to even try to make it multi-threaded.

That being said...  If our friendly MJ developers would allow parallel ripping (would need 2 CD readers, of course) or converting, then the OS would be most happy to send a process instance of the current LAME to each CPU.

The side benefit of multiple CPUs of course is that even if LAME doesn't support them, you can be happily ripping along at full speed while doing other things.

I must say, I think the way EAC (exact audio copy) does ripping and encoding is the best implementation I have ever seen.  It rips at top speed, and all encoding happens in background threads.  So, you can tell it to keep a max of say 3 or 4 threads running at once.

That way, i was able to rip 50 CDs or so (about 2 mins a piece), then walk away while all the encoding was taking place.

fantastic implementation.

King,
Bus speed is also important.

You said regarding EAC>> fantastic implementation

How much does EAC cost?
Where can I get it?

Get the fastest single CPU, bus and memory speed. Take it from me the overhead in XP to deal with dual processors just doesn't make it a worthwhile investment for single threaded processes.

well it seems it will not take advantage of the dual cpu unless it is programed to do that, and thats what i also thought

the single cpu has a High Bus speed

from www.alienware.com a bit over $4,000 right now

Processor:  IntelŪ PentiumŪ 4 w/ Heatsink & Cooling Fan
Speed:    2.53GHz
Bus Speed:    533MHz
Built-in Level 2 Cache:  512KB Advanced Transfer
