What you want to do is fill those categories into tags in your MC database.  The ways you can decide to do this would be potentially endless.

What I'd do is set [Media Sub Type] (one of the built-in tags) to the following:

Moves = Movies
TV = TV Shows
Cartoons = Other (with [Genre] set to Cartoon)
Cooking = Other (with [Genre] set to Cooking)
Home Movies = Home Video

And so on and so forth.  This should be relatively easy to do if you use a combination of the Fill Properties from Filename tool and breaking it down by import folder.

Then, you can build views that filter to show only the media you have tagged with those fields.  So, you make a new View under Video in the Tree, and then click the Set rules for file display button in the Customize Current View dialog, and set a rule to limit [Media Sub Type]=TV Show or whatever.

I would be interested if there was a way to merge or migrate the data from media center master (MCM) into JRiver.  The structure is close to but not exactly like the ones media center creates.  Any follow-up?

I don't think you can import those files any longer.  They appear to be encrypted.  I followed the instructions on the wiki page but most of the information is not brought into j. river
