It's being used more than before, but not nearly on the scale of Vorbis or MP3. I would say use Vorbis if quality, openness, and possible future hardware support are your main concerns. If quality is your only concern, MPC all the way. Easily the best sounding lossy codec for mid-high bitrates (160 kbps and above). And Frank has been working on some low bitrate improvements. They look very promising.

In case you're wondering, my library is made up of MPC (xtreme) and APE files. Great combination if you ask me.

I would like to give a try to Vorbis.Bitrate are of the same scale than for mp3?I mean if you want to compare to a 192kps mp3,you have to rip to Vorbis 192kps?

At this very time looks like you have more compatibility with MPC than Vorbis.I mean playing and burning in other programs than MJ

Vorbis should sound better than MP3 at nearly any bitrate. I'm not a big Vorbis nut (I prefer subband based coders, such as MP2 and MPC over transform coders such as MP3 and Ogg Vorbis), but the quality is very good. Perhaps you should start a new thread on Vorbis or check out http://www.hydrogenaudio.org. Great forum for learning about and discussing various audio coders.

Compatibility wise, MPC is only really supported by Winamp, XMMS (barely), and MJ. Vorbis is supported by the same software, but it also has a bright future in the hardware market as well. I don't think MPC will ever be played by a portable device until the companies wise up and allow user created plugins.

There is a car audio system that supports Vorbis.

Is there any statistics available over the most popular music formats out there?

Not really... the only advice I can give is trust your ears and weigh the options. If you rely on portables, you're obviously not going to pick a format with low hardware support (such as MPC or Vorbis). On the other hand, if top quality is your main concern, you're goint to want to choose the highest quality format available (MPC). Here's a little table on the good points of some of the more popular codecs available:

MPC
- unbeatable quality
- the format isn't complex
- fast for decode (100x on my P3 900 MHz)
- fast for encode (7x on my P3 900 MHz)
- Why you'd use it: if you're anal retentive about quality and have no use for portables or file sharing.

Vorbis
- great quality
- open
- slowly, but surely gaining popularity
- Why you'd use it: if you want an open format with good quality.

AAC
- great quality
- open standard
- fairly popular among big businesses, portable players are available
- Why you'd use it: I don't know, I find it too slow to be used by end users. It's also covered by some heavy patents.

MP3
- for the most part, good quality.
- open
- popularity
- portable player support
- Why you'd use it: you feel more comfortable using tried and true methods/portable support is important.

WMA/VQF/MP3pro
- Why you'd use these: if you like laughing.

The best way to judge a format is to try it out and see what you think. I used MP3 for about 3 years. Unhappy with the sound quality, I tried AAC about a year and a half ago and finally settled on MPC in March of 2001. It is a decision I have yet to regret.

I've only used Ogg Vorbis enough to hear how it sounds, and I used -q 5 and -q 6.

Empeg has support in the works (car player). I believe it's being tested right now.
iRiver is working on Vorbis support.
There is a Vorbis decoder for PocketPC.

What would be cool is if the portable market embraced the idea of user created plugins.
