Jim,

I have read the forum about the problems with supporting the newest iPods. For me this is also a real bad thing. A big reason to use MC is the good support for iPods instead of the stupid iTunes.

Anyway a few other questions:

• I have been told that ALAC is now free to use. Are you going to support the ALAC codec, couldn't find it through the software;
• Is there anyone who has upgraded their iPod with a 240GB disk;
• Do you know a way the bring the iPod software back to the supported 1.4 version.

I'd rather not have an iPod. But I use it for dance classes and all the other devices I have used are almost useless. The sound quality of the iPod is bad, really bad. But hey, I need a highly portable music player. A laptop is not an option.

The best audio quality is the Cowon X7, but horrible to use. And I need lots of space since I use lossless, no mp3 for me.

Consider using rockbox.  It replaces the OS on the device.

Rockbox is indeed an option for using alternative codecs. The highest level of iPod's they support is the iPod video which is very old.
I have tried Rockbox with an old iPod Photo several years ago. That iPod has already past away 


Will MC support ALAC in the nearby future?

Has anyone tried downgrading the latest iPod so we still have MC support?

MC can read ALAC files now, but it can't encode them.  That won't change in this version.

I just found out that ALAC is supported in version 18. Just bought the program  

Now, is there also a development that new iPods are supported ..

note that MC 18 supports natively ALAC, or it can transcode other files to ALAC, but without adapting them
to the maximum sample rate/bit depth supported by iPods (on the Classic: 48000Hz/16 bits, on the others I don't know).
So, if the source files don't respect those requirements, they must be first adapted using a 3rd party program.

When I select the native ALAC my iPod can not play the files.
Using D:\Downloads\qaac_1.38\qaac_1.38\x64\refalac64.exe plays without a problem.

What am I doing wrong here ..

I think you could try opening the converted files with MC itself to ensure they are OK; they should be within the directory configured as conversion cache,
or you can directly do the same with the files stored onto the iPod.
Either way, I can only suggest you to send technical details about the files (obtainable using MC itself or other programs, e.g. GSpot) to MC
developers, because it probably means there are some issues with the ALAC conversion engine provided by MC, apart from the known limitations about bit depth/sample rate I already wrote about to you and also in MC18 main forum.

I have a huge FLAC library and cannot get MC 18 to successfully convert to ALAC when transferring to my iPod Video 5G. The iPod sees the files, but when I attempt to play them it simply skips from track to track to track and no sound is produced.

Exactly that happens to me to.

Dpippel, the refalac64 encoder is not perfect, but it works.
