Go back or not, that is the question
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:27:54 pm »

I purchased mc 17. I am using an atom processor with 2 gb ram(max for the pc), solid state drive  and a USB DAC.  I have 120k songs all on nas drives .  I use pc for audio only - no web use,e use, etc.  pc has no monitor and is controlled with a VNC client and server. Win 7 pro.

I use wasapi, exclusive mode.

Don't care about movies or photos.

Pc is a CAPS 1 server on computer audiophile website - in case some are familiar.

The pc is often sluggish when searching, surfing to another drive, etc.  I often get a Windows MSG box stating do You want to wait or shut down mc?  It does recover in 5-20 seconds.

I improved things by deactivating many windows services, turned off indexing, etc. mc response is better but still laggardly at times.

so:

Is this machine underpowered?

Would mc 16 or 15  mc likely work better?

If so, do have same audio "insides" and hence sound same?

Similar features (I don't care re movies or photos) for audio in early versions?.

Do I have to buy again if I "downgrade"?

Thanks

I run it on an original atom netbook.  Less memory and a weenier drive.  Works fine.

I'm guessing NAS access is slow.  Give it some time to wiffle through all your songs and see if it doesn't speed up.

A drive spun down might look like that.

Virus checkers sometimes cause problems.

An older version of MC would probably not work as well.

If I'm remembering correctly, we tracked your slowdowns to computers / drives that were off the network.

I asked some questions here, hoping we could work together to find a solution:

Maybe you could follow-up in that thread, and we could go from there?
