Problems with reading playlists in 17.0.82
« on: February 15, 2012, 11:00:13 am »

I just tried to change to JR MC. I have around 1400 playlists in M3U format, they can be imported, but 500 cannot be read. These are "older" playlists, referring to files that are located 1 branch further away in the file tree.
WMP reads these files without a problem, just like Foobar2000 and MusiCHI.
Moving the audiofiles to another location and rewriting the playlists seems to be the only option...... but I'd like to spend my holiday in a better way!
Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks, Wim

If the M3U points to files that can't be found, it won't work.

But both relative and full paths should be fine.

Do you think the files should be findable?  If so, could you give a little more of an example, like maybe the playlist filename, media filename, and a couple lines of the M3U?

Thanks.

Here are two lines from current playlists, imported in wordpad. The first can be read by JR MC, the second can't be read.
But both of them work in all other players flawlessly!!!:

#EXTM3U
\\MMPC\Opslag (O)\Gedeelde map\Jazz\Brahms\Brahms - Complete Trios\03 Piano Trio in B Op.8 - III Adagio.mp3

#EXTM3U
..\..\Jazz\Domus\Brahms - Piano Quartets Nos. 1 & 3\01 Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25- Allegro.mp3

When I open the playlist in WMP and save it again with the same name it changes as follows, but still can't be opened in JR MC:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:0,01 Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25- Allegro.mp3
..\..\Jazz\Domus\Brahms - Piano Quartets Nos. 1 & 3\01 Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25- Allegro.mp3

The older (2th and 3th) playlist have changed paths due to migration to a new computer and a change of filestructure.

Thanks! Wim.

What's the full filename of the playlist in the example above (the m3u file)?

I'm trying to get the full picture of the relative paths so I can test the same thing here.

Thanks.

The first is called:

"Classical - Brahms - Beaux Arts Trio - Complete Trios"

the second is called:

"Classical - Brahms - Domus - Piano Quartets Nos. 1&3"

Thanks for your effort!

I think Matt is looking for the playlist file's fullpath, something like:

  C:\blah\blah\blah\playlist.m3u

Here it is:

O:\Gedeelde map\MP3\Mijn afspeellijsten\Classical - Brahms - Beaux Arts Trio - Complete Trios.m3u

If the playlist is here:
O:\Gedeelde map\MP3\Mijn afspeellijsten\Classical - Brahms - Beaux Arts Trio - Complete Trios.m3u

And it uses this relative path:
..\..\Jazz\Domus\Brahms - Piano Quartets Nos. 1 & 3\01 Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25- Allegro.mp3

That expands to:
O:\Gedeelde map\MP3\Mijn afspeellijsten\..\..\Jazz\Domus\Brahms - Piano Quartets Nos. 1 & 3\01 Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25- Allegro.mp3

Which is a long way of saying:
O:\Gedeelde map\Jazz\Domus\Brahms - Piano Quartets Nos. 1 & 3\01 Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25- Allegro.mp3

Is this where the files are located?

If not, you need to move the playlists to a place where the relative paths are correct.  Normally you would move the playlists and media together if they have relative paths so that the relations would not be broken.

I hope that helps.

This is the correct path to the mp3 file.
When I make a new playlist (not "saving" the old one again, by deleting the original, selecting the files to play in WMP) the "../../.."signs in the middle stay the same and the the playlist can still not be read by JR MC.
When I make a new playlist from scratch in JR MC it works - off course - correct. The full line in the playlistfile then is:
O:\Gedeelde map\Jazz\Domus\Brahms - Piano Quartets Nos. 1 & 3\01 Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25- Allegro.mp3

Thanks for all your efforts.
It seems that, if I want to continue with JR MC, I have to do a lot of work. While other, lesser players, don't have this reading problem.
Moving the MP3 files results in making 500 new playlists, x 2 minute = .....
Can't you just build the world a high-end player, with professional volume control with all the correct dithering, based upon the file- en UI structure of WMP? Just as a plug-in?
I'll be the first to buy one!

Thanks again, Wim.

Thanks for the help.

In a coming build:
Fixed: Relative paths that moved up multiple paths with ../.. would not be handled properly in some cases.
