Blu-Ray Playback Issue: Video delayed by ~3 frames
« on: February 17, 2012, 01:18:05 am »

Hi there,

I'm watching a Blu-Ray using AnyDVD HD and running madVR. The image quality is fantastic, however there's a delay of (I would say about) 3 frames while watching Se7en at 23.97fps. The audio comes before the video.

I'm using Red October HQ (SQ doesn't change anything) and VideoClock doesn't help really.

Here's some extra info:

Bumping! Please help!

I should note that I'm using ASIO out to a headphone amplifier.

Did you try the audio-video sysnc option? Tools>Options>Video>Advance

I have seen it. It asks me to put in the number of milliseconds that the video delays to match the audio, correct?

But that's just a rough estimate based on perception, and it just patches over the problem as opposed to solving it...

Thanks anyways though.

If the problem occurs on all your movie playback, it may just be a delay thats introduced by your hardware (most likely the TV). In that case, it cannot be automatically solved, thats what those configuration options are for to compensate for the delay.

Turns out it's for all video, not just Blu-Ray (I have used JRiver exclusively for music up until now). It also turns out that it is in fact ASIO causing this issue.

The ASIO buffering was set at 1 second, lowering it to the minimum (0.02 seconds) decreases the issue, but it's still there. Direct Sound eliminates it. Too bad.

Can you set the ASIO buffer to .05 and set the MC Audio-Video sync to .05 to get a 0 delay?
Also, did you try WASAPI?

I thought this was the common thing - and excatly why you need to adjust sync by perception. 3 frames at 23.796fps means you need to offset (i.e. delay) your audio by 125.1ms. Not an uncommon value in my experience, in systems with video processing delays downstream your computer.

What I also do not get is why reducing ASIO buffer should decrease the video delay. I would think the opposite, as the audio was already ahead of the video. Are you looking at two different problems here?

It is strange though, that using DirectSound eliminates the problem.
