Theatre View: show search at file level not working?

I don't think I  understand how the Search at File Level alphabet is supposed to work, because whenever I select a letter (in the screenshot attached) nothing gets displayed even though I had a whole slew of titles showing on the same page just before I selected a letter. I get a message in the middle of the screen saying that "There are no items to display".

Is it broken or do I not know how to use it?
