Got my 'new' 10mm lens last week, took it out for the first time on Saturday.. It was really cold, and really, really windy, but hey, new toys and all that, right?

Taken from the top of Tantallon Castle. The castle dovecot in the foreground, North Berick Law in the distance. This is my desktop wallpaper, for today, at least.

The Bass Rock, or simply The Bass,[5] (play /ˈbęs/), is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland. It is approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) offshore, and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) north-east of North Berwick. It is a steep-sided volcanic rock, 107 metres (351 ft) at its highest point, and is home to a large colony of gannets. The rock is currently uninhabited, but historically has been settled by an early Christian hermit, and later was the site of an important castle, which was, after the Commonwealth, used as a prison. The island was in the ownership of the Lauder family for almost six centuries, and now belongs to Sir Hew Fleetwood Hamilton-Dalrymple. A lighthouse was constructed on the rock in 1902, and the remains of a chapel are located there. The Bass Rock features in numerous works of fiction, including Robert Stevenson's Catriona and The Lion is Rampant by contemporary Scottish novelist Ross Laidlaw

I bought myself a Nikon D5000 a couple of years ago. I started off with an 18-200mm zoom lens which has been great. I really enjoy getting out of the city with my camera. I quickly learned that I needed something wider than 18mm for the landscape shots I enjoy taking, but having splashed almost £1000 on the body and the 18-200, another six or seven hundred on a lens was never going to get past the financial auditor (aka "The Wife") without some considerable time passing. Time has passed. I picked one up on Ebay for £500 saving between one and two hundred (which was spent on my new monitor) and I'm asking all my friends and family for small donations towards my "Lens fund" for my birthday to help soften the blow a bit.

The D5000 is an entry level DSLR and after two years, I still have a lot to learn, and I don't get out with the camera nearly as much as I'd like to. I won't replace this camera unless it breaks, or I reach a point on the learning curve where I'm told I "can't do that with that camera... you'll need something like x-y-z if you want to do that"

Until then, I am really happy with the learning, and my two lenses. The 10mm is great. I am quite pleased with the results I got at the weekend there, and that despite going out to take landscape pics in the brightest sunlight we've had for weeks, at one in the afternoon, with no filters! The camera struggled with it, but I'm still happy with the results.

Beautiful shots, marko!

I don't have a nice wide-angle lens myself, and we just have a little Digital Rebel XSi, but we like playing with it.  Most of our pictures come through our iPhones now, honestly, but not these.

The other problem now, is that most of our pictures aren't of landscapes anymore.  While those photos were being taken, this was also happening.

Absolute magic!! We did that three times in all and now have three granddaughters as a result. We have so many photos of the kids and their kids it ridiculous!! I refuse to remove them, I love them, but I do have slideshows, set to music, in theater view that exclude any photo that contains people. I like those a lot, though the girls say they're boring!!
