APE and APL files - importing
« on: February 18, 2012, 09:04:38 pm »

This subject seems to have come up reasonably often over the years, although I haven't had much need for it until recently when playing around with some ape files.

It seems if you have a single ape file of an album, that is imported as one long file.
If you make an associated set of apl files with Monkeys Audio, to give individual tracks, those apls are also imported.  So then you end up with all the tracks and the full file appearing.

It would seem the simplest solution to this would be to have the import dialog just allow separate import of ape, or apl.  This was raised in a linked post back in 2003, but MC16 didn't allow it, and I see that MC17 still doesn't.

Is there a simpler way to do it?  Am I missing something here?  Is there a technical reason why this can't happen?
Or is this just a feature request that has never been implemented?

What do other people do that have ape files, both single file albums and individual track apes?

"Import just the APL files. An APL file holds tags and a link to a certain position. All files must be in the same folder. You can't rename APE files later. APL files will loose links.
You can also import APE files, but that is not needed. APE files can have different tags. APL files are not using them.  - import just APL - how?

For now, you'll have to import both and just remove the APE entry from the library.  You could make a smartlist, for example, that shows APE files in the specific folders where you use APL files.

Thanks Matt, I've been playing around and came up with that work around in the last couple of days!
Seems like a less-than-ideal way to do things, but it works.  It just means if there are many APE files, a lot get imported initially.

This issue would seem to have been around for a while, certainly since the December 2003 post that was linked below.
As asked in that post, can this be incorporated in a new release?
It would seem trivial to do, but I understand that may well not be the case.  Does it just keep getting overlooked for more important items?

Fantastic product, by the way.  I'm sure I'm only scratching at the edges of what it can do.
