I've got a nvidia-based motherboard and it's rather annoying in how it auto-detects whether anything is plugged into an audio port.  This presents problems to MC if a connection is disconnected or changed.  As in, headphones unplugged.  Now, I don't intend to make use of come-and-go connections but I have to wonder as to whether this auto-detection can be disabled. 

Is there a registry tweak to convince Win7 to treat all the ports as connected?  Or at least just the main audio out?

Nevermind, found it. 
Use REGEDIT:

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}000\GlobalSettings
Change the value EnableDynamicDevices to zero.
Reboot

This will entirely disable the win7 jack detection feature.  All ports will be seen regardless of having a connection or not.  You can then use the sound control panel to disable any ports you'd want to prevent being used (like extra SPDIF and Mic ports on my creative USB devices).
