Client server help please
« on: February 28, 2012, 05:50:05 pm »

I have set up client and server on my two computers.

When I make changes on the client then sync the library they are not being saved in the library.

If I close the client and re open they are unassigned again.

I also have two zones on my server but only one on the client.

You have activated the authentication under the Media Network settings? You'll need to have an authenticated client to make changes. If no authentication was required, everyone could connect to your server and mess up your library. Also make sure you've selected "Automatically sync changes made on client back to server". I think this option have to be set on the client.

Changes made on library fields will be synced back to the server, from the client. Changes on views and other things in MC will probably only sync from SERVER to client. That might be your problem. I struggled a bit with this my self back in the day. But as soon as I understood that most things needed to be configured on the server, everything worked fine.

This is probably it.

Maid, can you explain more WHAT you are trying to change from the Client?

You CANNOT change any view, you CANNOT change Theater View setup, delete playlists, or basically any other "Library Structure Management" types of tasks.  If you do these tasks from a client machine, it'll "work" until you close and restart that client (or resync with the server manually), after which your changes will revert.  To change "views" (and similar tasks) you have to do these things directly on the server (or alternately close the server, open the library directly on the client machine, make your changes, close the client, and then reopen the server).  You CAN tag files though, and this works well on my system at home.

Make sure to check the Client Options under Options -> Media Network -> Client Options on the individual client machine copies of MC.  Those "client options" are, somewhat obviously, client-specific not server-specific.

I find it odd I can create and rename playlists and add or remove files from a playlist but I can't delete a playlist.

If you posted something I never saw it.

You should bump the thread, and/or give it a better title/description.  It might be that no one understood, or no one who could help looked at it because the Subject was vague.

I found it since you linked to it above.  (Duh.)

Perhaps something is broken with external access or something (this doesn't make a lot of sense because it is the same protocol on the same port, unless some Firewall is filtering HTTP requests on your port or something).  Maid, are you connecting from the client using <machine address>:<port> or using an Access Key?

I am supposed to be connecting with an access key, if I have set it up correctly. I have this m01p://HTPC

As I could not get it to work I have gone back to using the library over the network, which means no one else can make changes.

As we are using the remote the media server is still on the HTPC machine.

When I start MC in my office it comes up that the database is in use??

We can fix your server machine.  What machine do you want to act as the server?

On that machine, do this:

Click the Start Button and type:
cmd

Hit Enter.

In the command prompt box, type:

ipconfig

Copy and paste the results here.

Also, briefly describe your network.  If you have a Router/Firewall box (certainly), tell me what make/model it is.  Also, how does it connect to the Internet?  Is it also acting directly as your DSL/Cable modem, or is it connected to a separate modem box (which is then plugged into the phone line/cable/whatever)?

this sounds to me like 2 machines are opening the same library, and the office machine is the 2nd instance, which is why you see that warning.

If this is correct, you're not connecting as a client, which is why nothing is being saved when you close.  You would need to go to  File > Library > Client of xxxxxx and this will connect you as a client of the server, and will allow you to save the types of changes discussed above.

I did the ipconfig on the machine but it does not put anything on the screen.

File > Library > Client of xxxxxx is not there so its obvious I am still accessing the local library.

I think I have all the right boxes ticked and the server is on.

You have to add the Server library to the Client.  Just for a sanity check, did you do this?

Click on the Playing from item under Playing Now in the tree, and add a new Library (if the one you want isn't already there).  Put your Server's Access Key in the top box, and click OK.  It should load the server's library then (prompting you for the username/password first).

If it doesn't, it could be a network configuration issue on the Server-side or on the Router (a firewall blocking it would be a likely culprit).

As far as the ipconfig thing... Did you do exactly what I said?

Click the Start button, then type this in the search box at the bottom (you can just click the start button and start typing, or just copy/paste the following line into the Search box):

cmd /k ipconfig

Then hit enter.  That should open something like this:

Okay, so you have one "box" that connects all of your computers to the Internet, not two, right?  The one the DSL company gave you?

How do I send the screen dump?

You can copy the stuff in the command prompt window and paste it to the forum.  Follow these instructions:
