Dear Esther - blurs the line between game and movie
« on: February 26, 2012, 09:24:01 am »

There's a new game called Dear-Esther available for $10 on Steam.

It uses a game engine, but it's more like a movie that you walk through at your own pace.  The whole thing lasts about 90 minutes.

It's visually beautiful, and the story is exceptional.

It was made by a small team.  They paid back their financial backing in 6 hours and sold $500k in the first week.

I hope their well deserved success leads to more experimentation with interactive movies.  It could define a new genre of media.

Here's some amazing technology.  Still, somehow, it feels deeply disturbing.

I actually played it a bit but couldn't decide whether I liked it or not.

Not the least to mention it made me motion sick, so bad that after 10 minutes of playing I was retching  :-\.
